Fixing my kid's car

So I drove all the way out to Arizona yesterday to help Pamela move her hay trailer, a task that took a total of maybe 20 minutes. She made me lunch, I took a nap, then drove back to Las Vegas and got back here at 4 pm.. 

Ryan's car has been making some serious noises so I took it to a buddy's house and we worked on it for three and a half hours last night and are not yet halfway finished. Turns out his wheel bearings are shot in the front end. We only have to take half of the front end off on each side to fix the damned things. As you know, I am nearly worthless at such stuff. Thank God my buddy knows what he is doing!

So I have to be there in an hour to start day two of work on the damned car while Ryan has to go to work snapping pictures. My two days off were consumed by his car. What is wrong with this picture?

You take it to a shop and pony up $1200 or whatever and have them do it.  I don't like getting my hands dirty!!

Those wheel bearings are a nightmare.   I had an 90's model chevy car and my front right had to get replaced 3 or 4 times in 6 years.   

I then had a 2000 model chevy and about 4 years into it was at the garage and they said your wheel bearing is shot, guy said I could get 10-12K max out of it...I drove that thing another 110,000 miles and never gave it another thought.

Dang, I hate when auto repairs don't go well.   A broken vehicle, or a vehicle with issues can be the worst downer.

Hyundai will be expensive repairs, I always try to deal with the dealership, even though you pay close to double.

  Wheel bearings have a very short shelf life in desert climates, as you well know...Florida is likewise. Best of luck on that one...

Taking the car to Pope Of Vegas' stepson tomorrow. I can no longer work on cars. I have retired.

Ryan and I went out to his mother's house in Arizona yesterday after I got off work at noon. She had called me to ask me to bring Ryan come and help her unload 7 tons of hay.

I got into the act right from the start, but about ten bales into it, fell down when I started making a second level on her hay trailer. The bale I was standing on got to wiggling and I fell backwards very awkwardly. The hay broker saved me from falling off the wagon backwards. (To those of you who don't know it, I already broke my back and neck once a few years back, so falling off a hay trailer backwards is something I don't need to be doing!)

I got right back up and kept on working for about another 15 bales, when I fell hard once again, twisting my back, knee, and even the titanium rod in my leg. Pamela started screaming at me to get down, I was finished. Of course as soon as she went into the house to get Ryan, I got up and started working again, this time staying on the ground.

As it turned out, she got an extra ton, so about five of us unloaded 8 tons. Ryan and I then hayed and watered her horses, she went to work, and we returned to Las Vegas. By the time I got back here, I could barely walk. I jumped in the shower and that loosened me up a bit. Then took some ibuprofen (a lot!), and went to bed at 8:30. Woke up at 2:30 for work feeling no pain except my normal daily pain. I felt it a couple of hours later when the ibuprofen wore off, so I got four more pills, took that and added a couple of extra-strength tylenol. Made it through my work day with no problem.

Now after a long nap, I am feeling fairly normal! In another day or two, I will be able to go restack that hay.

Ahhhh, Ryan's car is finally nearly totally fixed. It only cost the kid $600 or so. Two new tires, new alignment should be done today, new front wheel bearings, new front brake pads and rotors. And it only cost me an additional $60 for my buddy's labor. I told the kid I would handle that part. Oh and I threw in my 10 hours of labor as well, free of charge.

Aren't I a great father?

It WAS grinding before Kreml put the wheel bearings in.  I mean grinding so badly I would not even allow Ryan to drive the car. It's a miracle the wheel didn'tfall off!

There is a whole lot more to this story than you know about. I went ballistic when I was finally allowed to drive the car. Let's just say Shawn is our new mechanic.

You need a new dealership, the above statement is a myth!

Independant shops in town $65-70 per hour, Dealership $75.00. Same labor time guides used, only real difference is in parts but heres the kicker.....you pay $300.00 for hub bearing assembly from GM and it is warranted lifetime parts and labor, I will happily put on Napa or Auto Zone hub for $200.00 but only one year warranty on part, no warranty on labor.....not even close to comparing apples to apples!

Don't fret too much, Gary, lots of old guys have occassional trouble with their ball bearings.
