Forty-six years ago today Frank Ervin flew out to California, sporting an abscessed jaw that was swollen and painful. His charge, Bret Hanover, was to make his final start the following day in the $50,000 Classic at Hollywood Park. A record crowd of 23,787 fans showed up the following day. The horse had been behaving in a lackadaisical manner, so ten minutes prior to post Ervin outfitted him in a blind bridle. The week before, in the $20,000 Preview Pace, Ervin had backed the half down to 1:02, only to be collared by Jim Dennis and Adios Vic in a pedestrian :59.2. Ervin was determined that this not happen again.

Ever since the founding of Western Harness in 1946, the T-bred folks kept their feet on the neck of harness racing in California. The trotters were bounced back and forth between Hollywood Park and the sight of yesterday

Thanks everyone!  One was placed very aggressively, hence the win at 3/5!  The other, as you Chicago people may know, has all the heart in the world, and I think I can safely say went the biggest mile of the weekend of any horse!  Track was in bad shape due to some rain water last week that got into the base, and they are going to be re-doing it this week.  My other horse, Wild About Eagle, qualifies this coming week, and I really look forward to seeing her do well also!

Have to give kudos to Steve and Kathy for having the horses ready!  Barn won 4 races with 5 starters over the weekend!  Hope it continues!   thumbsup

The 2nd weekend of racing is here, and we are starting to see some 'new blood' in the racing colony.  Bruce Clarke is back and driving a couple.  Richard Schneider has come down from Alberta and is racing some.  Evan Coblentz has arrived from the midwest, and is driving this weekend.  Others will be arriving in the next few weeks.  We have 29 races of relatively full fields today and tomorrow, and there are a bunch of horses being qualified tomorrow.  I think management and us horsemen will wish that we were going to 3 days sooner than Dec. 26th, because we may start to see some AE's in a few weeks.  Hope not as everyone needs to race every week out here after many were off for 5 months!

My boys are in the 12th and 13th on Saturday, and my mare qualifies tomorrow before the races.  If you are playing Cal Expo at all this weekend, let me know, and I can maybe give you some clues.   ;D

Thanks!  The horses are just in great shape thanks to Steve and Kathy, and are placed to win, which they did.  And yes, Taxi Dancer was the value for Robin at $14.80 with a great job again by Steve.  And also, Robin's trotter Franky Provolone, which she claimed for $3750 in the spring, won the Open Trot on Friday night!  Talk about bringing the best out of a horse!

Wild About Eagle qualified, and so I will have 3 in next weekend.  Wish it was tomorrow!   rflmao1   rflmao1

Not bad, 1st, 3rd, 6th... I will take a win each week!   thumbsup

Robin's trotter Franky Provolone won the Open trot again this week, good for her!  Things are so good, she claimed another one from Luke Plano, called Terror Time!  Good luck with that one!  Hopefully he can be improved as much as Franky was when taken from Luke!   ;D
