Having bred, raised, trained, and drove some of my own into the winners circle made all the hard work gloriously worth it. I cracked a reporter up once in the winners circle when he asked me what it felt like to win a nice stake with one of mine, and I said it was the most fun you can ever have with your clothes on.

I know this sounds weird with the way half-mile track races are contested today, but the biggest thrills I've ever had in harness racing was when my horse would sit last at the 3/4 and swoop the field.

My thought has always been that I never wanted my horses to cut the mile more than 5-6 times per year. It always seemed to me that horses that cut the mile or are gunned off the gate simply do not stay sharp for very long.

I wanted to win every week if possible, but not on the front end. Today these guys go all they can go from the start. To me that's just dumb.

I had Raceway Park's stretch down to a science.  When I came off the turn at the top of the stretch if I was sitting no worse than 4th whoever was in front of me was getting nailed don't care how many lengths in front they were ,  an if I was cutting the mile, many thought they had me  but most gunned off that stretch turn only to run out of gas before the wire as I cruised home. Loved Raceway Parks' stretch.  Glory Days.

An overview of my perfect race day: horse has had a good week jogging/training, we are 7/2 in the program, Grismore picked our horse, the harness is spotless, I have a lil play by play of the race with the horse and tell him how great he is. Now I can go over to the grandstand and stand by the winners circle because my job is now done...I have ensured that the horse has had a good week / been well taken care of; has the best chance to reach his maximum best in this particular race and he know that he is appreciated. Then the moment my horse steps out on the track and they announce his name it always sends shivers down my spine and the stomach butterflys start! I watch him score down and then bet a $1 tri wheel, $20 to win if he is over 5/2.As the wings fold the butterflies in my stomach leave and I become extremely calm inside because I know he is in great hands and will win for us all
