Heat Racing

With the Hambo just around the corner, wanted to get your thoughts on heat racing.  Comments appreciated.

the need for speed has ruined both breeds.

From a wagering perspective, a 2nd heat rarely gives you anything of value; I avoid betting on it.

From a fan perspective, it does nothing for me.  I'd prefer to have elims the previous week so that the anticipation can build for the final.  Also, I don't care for horses running against each other more than once in a day; watching a horse beat the same bunch more than once is redundant.

Imagine if the Kentucky Derby were run in heats.

The one thing that separates standardbreds and thoroughbreds is the fact that standardbreds were made to go heats. Secretariat would likely have gotten beat if he had to go heats.

The standardbred might of been made to go heats back in the 70's but not anymore.

I don't buy it. The good trainers certainly have no problem getting them to go two heats. Go to Lexington or Delaware and watch them.

Rock N Roll Heaven is the only horse I can remember that after racing the jug ( In the last 10 years) that actually went on to win big races after. All the rest weren't close in the breeders crown.

Shit Vegas Vacation hasn't stepped foot on the track yet this year and won't till next year. Yeah that is worth racing heats to owners....

It is a relic of the past.  Times have changed.  How many trainers today have never raced a horse in heats?
There are now so few heat races that it really is an aberration.

Rock N Roll Heaven is the only horse I can remember that after racing the jug ( In the last 10 years) that actually went on to win big races after. All the rest weren't close in the breeders crown.

I agree with Champ on this one, as a better I couldn't care less for heats. You win the heats, you draw the inside posts and one you most likely wins. It's not like a horse finishes 3rd in the first heat and he comes back stronger from post 7 and upsets. It's normally a boring race with zero betting interest which isn't what you should want.
