I least I feel safe at the racetrack!  Welcome to the murder capitol of the world.  Our Gov says we need more gun laws.  Yeah sure, although the 100's on the books now are ignored by the criminals, we need more.  That'll take care of it!

The July 4 weekend gun violence pushed the number of Chicago murder victims this year over 200. Many of he shootings were in neighborhoods where gangs are well established.

Chicago reached a tragic milestone this past holiday weekend, surpassing 200 homicides for the year, with 74 people shot between Wednesday afternoon and Sunday night.
Two of the victims were young boys, aged 5 and 7, according to the Chicago Police Department. Chicago Tribune data shows they were among the 12 people killed by gun violence over the four-day period.
Chicago has recently suffered from spikes in gun violence originating from hundreds of gang factions established in block-by-block territories on the South and West sides of the city. According to police data, 40 percent of the gun violence over the weekend took place in just two neighborhoods in those areas – Austin to the west, and Garfield Park to the south.

The increase in gun violence since last year, when fatalities surpassed 500 deaths, prompted the police department to incorporate new strategies for targeting specific individuals, or locations, in an effort to prevent violence before it takes place. Police officials have also endorsed using social media to track “hot” activity among gang members, plus have cracked down on corner liquor or grocery marts, which they say have become conduits for crime.
The efforts were launched despite what police say is a shortage of manpower. In 2011, the year Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) took office, the number of officers on the streets dropped 11 percent from five years prior. Since then, budget cuts resulted in the elimination of 1,400 department jobs, which the Fraternal Order of Police says are needed to adequately patrol high-crime areas.
Chicago Alderman Robert Fioretti of the Second Ward, where some of the violence took place this weekend, echoed that concern, criticizing Mayor Emanuel as slow to replace police retirees with new hires.
“Police should have saturated that area for the remainder of this weekend. There is a failure to police the streets,” Alderman Fioretti told the Chicago Sun-Times Monday.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) used the weekend shootings to underscore the need for a statewide assault weapons ban. He also explained to reporters why he altered a concealed carry firearms bill so that it limited the number of weapons a person can carry to one and banned carrying guns at restaurants, bars, and other establishments with liquor licenses. Illinois lawmakers are expected to override Governor Quinn’s changes. Illinois is the last state in the nation to have a ban on carrying concealed firearms.
The weekend shootings “ought to be an alarm bell to all of us that we need strong laws that protect the public safety, especially when it comes to guns. It’s time to end the violence,” Quinn told reporters Sunday.

Sure is a shame what is happening in what really is or has been a Great City in so many ways.   Who would have ever thought you'd feel safer at the racetrack than on the streets of Chicago?!   As for Quinn - I pay zero attention to this guy anymore.   How soon is the next election?   Who appears to be the heir apparent?

What most of these MORONS never mention is that 99.9% of these shooting and killing are not by people

with gun permits but by the criminals with stolen or illegally purchased guns. I have a small collection

and today is the day they override this idiot and make carry and conceal law. This guy is done in IL

politics and the only reason he does anything is to please the people in Cook county who put him in

office, I believe in that last election he won 3 counties in the whole state and Cook county is by far

the biggest and put him in office. I have no problem with them banning assault weapons but the rest

of the law is a bunch of B.S. IMO.

Go ask a cop in Chicago or NYC how many times they see crimes commited by legally obtained guns and most will say they have never seen it.

But make some gun laws. That will stop criminals because they love obeying laws

Work on society.

Less poverty.

I see in NYC Spitzer and Weiner are both running for office again after huge scandals. Spitzers particularily was a criminal thing.

30 or 40 years ago a scandal like this was the end of your career.
In America in 2013 it really doesn't matter anymore.

Its a about a breakdown of morals and integrity and society.

They did a poll of high school seniors in the 1950s and 7% of them thought they were important. Did the same poll a few years ago and 92% consider themselves important. That's an issue too.

So in 50 years kids have basicly lost a lot of of morals and integrity but gained a ton of self importance.

Impove society and it will help with gun violence and everything else.

Outlawing guns wont solve the problem.

Can you all give any suggestions for getting the guns out of the hands of criminals?

Enforce the laws and make mandatory sentences for the animals, not enough room here ? Ship there asses

to some remote island and pay them $250,000.00 each criminal to keep them there. How many of these

criminals have just gotten out of prison that have been repeat offenders within 6 months of early release?

These Judges are too easy, I think sheriff Joe should handle ALL U.S. prisoners

if you are found murdering someone w gun you should be shot to  death w the same gun.
the population will decrease by one and and new job is created

we spend too much money housing murderers after they are convicted.if there is no doubt you murdered someone you need to be put to death within 1 yr of conviction

I do agree with the commit a gun crime. Any crime with a gun and you get the death penalty.

That would deter a lot of it.

But the reality of living in America in 2013 is we will never see it.

I thought I read a lot of the murders were gang related? Some folks just need to be killed. I have no problem with the gangs killing each other off. And if they mess with me or my family, there will be another gun crime committed.
