Gural must be ecstatic!
« on: June 12, 2013, 10:15:37 AM »
Looking at the Meadowlands entries for this weekend, it looks like the horsemen are coming through putting in their 2nd and 3rd tier of horses to race there so they have nice full fields.  That's all Gural wants right?  Until they actually use some of all this money they claim to be making on purse increases, this is what they will get.

Making money?

Lets be frank, out of 3 million handle gural can hardly cover the purses paid.   Saturday night was in excess of 160k in purses.   That's over 5% of the nights handle.  He is lucky to get 3 or 4% of that 3 million.

Still after paying purses he has how many employees?  Tellers, security, guest services, promotions, janitors, etc etc etc.

And even on top of that he has utilities.  Power, water, sewer, gas, phones and data services, etc etc etc.

Yeah he's really making money and can up the purses.

I think he is doing the best he can with what he has and has made huge strides and progress among his customers and horsemen.

Furthermore, I never seen anyone from the meadowlands claim they were making money.

To do so as a customer or to interpret that and post it on this forum is reckless at best and criminal at worst.

Really IMO to do as well as they have against the slot states I think they are doing OK. I don't agree with

everything he does but no matter what you can't make everyone happy, If they had slots like they should

have it would be a different story or if the other tracks didn't have slots all the top horses would be at

M1 like they used to be. I don't get how like last Fri/Sat  they had low class horses and lower tier

drivers and yet in 2 nights I think they handled about 5.5 mil . Best handle anywhere if I'm not mistaken.

If they are ever going to turn a profit without slots, they need to grow the on track wagering as that % is much more profitable than the intertrack $. I assume Gural is doing the best he can till the new grandstand finishes and he gets closer to some casino wagering at the Big M. At that point purses would go up as hoped by many. I for one still enjoy betting the full field/mile track action despite the "cheapness" of some of the fields.

what we do not know is how much is handled at the meds on incoming siumlcasts.the same with njbets as i think they own part of that now also
whether they show a profit or not so far this season they surely overpaid purses last year
next year with the new grandstand will tell the tale whether the racing can make it on it's own at the meds

That will tell the story.  If on track attendance doesn't go up with the new facility---not good for the future.

like most businesses they start off with losses until they start making $$$

one day when they do have slots the profits in the entity will be massive

does the handle increase actually hurt Gural in his real wishes of what he wants the Big M to be ?
