Safety in the Winner's Circle

How dangerous is the winner's circle?  Is crowding a bunch of little kids into the photo a good idea?

Depends on the horse. I have had horses rear up every time they go to the winners circle, other horses are gentle as a lamb.

Absolutely depends on the horse.

Henry the king ruined every winners circle photo he ever took.

Ive been scared a few times.

Loose deuce is pretty scary now.

But the scary ones are a small minority.

I had a really good trotting filly that was a total pet before a race and after you got the harness off her. But she was scary right after a race until the adrenoline came back down. She was downright uncontrolable in the winners circle. I won with her at Hoosier Pk and my Bride couldn't be there. Some guy who weighed about 300lbs and tall asked if I wanted him to hold her for the pic. I told the photographer to hurry because she'd throw a fit. Long story short: When the big'un got hold of her bridle she flung him right out the the winners circle like a piece of paper.(over the chain-link fence) I jumped back on the bike and boogied back to the paddock. As soon as I got her stripped she was back to being a pet. They are all different.

The only two unconcerned about about being trampled are Randy and our eldest Carson at the end..........Carson's too goofy and I guess Randy assumes Buck had her under control.

One time at Springfield Ronnie "BOOM BOOM" Marsh was in the winners circle after winning with a filly. He was standing behind the sulky seat holding the lines  and this nasty bitch kicked and caught him right in the leg... down he went. I was amazed his leg wasn't broken.

A bit off topic, but I was paddocking a mare named Bye Bye Megan at Sportsman's Park one night. Doug Hamilton was driving her and she was a cinch to win....until her hopple broke at the half. The middle of the hopple hit Dougie squarely in the balls, several times.

WHen he pulled up he was white as a ghost, and of course when he told me the problem, I could barely get her off the track, I was laughing so hard. She still finished 5th I think, even with the broken hopple.
