I break down my selections by grouping them into tiers.
For example: R9 - 6,7,2,3($) 8($),9 10
In this race, I think 6,7,2,3 are better than the rest. 6 would be my top pick, then 7, etc. However, since they are all grouped in the same tier, I don't think there is a large difference between them, so I wouldn't put too much confidence on the order of 6 over 7, 2, and 3.
8 and 9 make up my second tier selections. They have a chance to win, but I don't like them nearly as much as the top tier choices.
I try to add a "$" to indicate that there may be a nice price on certain runners.
From a wagering standpoint, if I find better value on 7 or 2, I might put them on top over the 6 in a gimmick. Also, from a pick4 perspective, I might put all of my top tier picks on the same ticket. Lastly, for those wanting to play tri's and super's, I would consider including runners such as my second and third tier selections.
