I thought you'd like that, Gary.

Here is and always has been my thinking: Chemically enhanced horses tend to not be able to race heats, where properly conditioned horses can.
-
Guess all of the guys aren't going to race in the Hambo starting next year then... 4pezz2

Absolutely! thumbsup thumbsup
Don't you just love how these "trainers" claim to care about there horses' well being & then send you a vet bill for a couple of thousand a month!
Foley says "race them Tuesday, then come back on Thursday". The next guy who can't train will say "we need a week between races", then 2 weeks & so on & so on & so on.

They continue to ruin the sport because the druggists rule. If they turn their back on the Jug, like Someonesomewhere did, the Hambo will be next. Don't put it past them.
And stop rewarding these guys by using terms like "great" for horses who are protected from the competition in places like Ontario Sire Stakes & Maryland Sire Stakes.
-
Maybe next olympics the swimmers will compete over the course of 5 months.
-
Why can't they just say "every horse is different"?
If you don't want to go two heats don't stake.......simple.
If your horse doesn't come out of the first heat up to par, scratch.........also simple.
I love how he has to use other trainers names to justify himself. idunno
Racing an elimination and a final would destroy the race........period.

Other suggestions:
slaphead Ryder Cup is going to change their format to 5 days so no one has to play 36 holes.
slaphead NFL targets a March Super Bowl so every team gets a week off in between games.
slaphead MLB bans pitchers from starting with less than 10 days rest. Relievers get 5 days rest.
slaphead NBA skips regular season & goes straight to playoffs. Hey we finally hit on something!
slaphead Boston Marathon changes it's name to Boston Sprint.

Imagine the crying you

thumbsup The best trainers in harness history somehow knew how to condition one to go multiple heats... hell, even I could do that. Don't want to race heats? Don't stake and enter a multi-heat event.
Wah, wah, wah, I want the rules changed for ME. :'(
-
I agree that you know the format, do not enter if not prepared to go 2 heats. They should change it so another horse can fill the spot if someone decides to scratch in the second heat!...jmo
-
they should change the rules and make the second and final heat worth substantially more than the eliminations (25% first heat, 75% second heat) to make it really worth it to race the second heat where the horse really earns it

Is that not about what they do now?
2012
First heat $78,008
Second heat $331,534
-
THen why did you enter in the first place ?
Did you get to the track and then were shocked to see they ran the jug in heats ?
While your busy patting yourself on the back about other trainers telling how great of a guy you are, why don't you find out whats wrong with DUER. That performance last night at the Red Mile should put a bigger alarms than your worries about the 2nd heat.

I agree Dink. I also think our horses are being bred for speed and conformation is so much better but along the way we are losing thier stamina that they were once known for. Most of these standardbreds look like thorobreds. they are big and beautiful but the raw boned strength is only in a few. heat racing will soon be gone because in a long 3 yr old campaign they just cannot finish the year in the top form they started in no matter how great the trainer is or how great the horse is. Fans are pissed horses are not going 2 heats or missing big races but racing these good horses for weeks in a row just is not working anymore. You have to pick your spots and the good horsemen are doing just that.

Agree with the stamina thing
Breeding /training / chemicals,,,, geared for fast fast fast
times being what they are now, but 15-20 years ago would you have heard of a top notch trainer going a training trip in 49 and change on a horse before a big race ? ( granted whatever the comparable time would have been 20 years ago )
Not saying things were done better back then, but it was different..... Does anyone ever train a double header anymore ?
-
Double Headers? very rarely. only on an older horse and usually i'm mad at the horse. rflmao1
-
Casie's horse has done it twice this year and she isn't bitching, quit whining about it just don't enter if you don't like it.

Bolt The Duer has blown his chance to win the division, but CMO is almost a sure bet to win her division and she
-
Would you snub her because she's bowing out of the filly Futurity after one round?
Absolutely. She can consider herself snubbed by the writers of In The Sulky. ;D
-
IMO, Check me out jumped it off in her biggest race of the year and is only going to go 1 heat in the futurity. She has ZERO chance to win horse of the year.
As Long as the Captain doesn't lose the rest of the year, he will win. Cheddar is the best horse in training, but has missed to many big races to be considered horse of the year.
-
FWIW, I vote for HOTY and neither she nor Bolt will get my votes.

Do you mean HOTY overall or just divisional champ? In Bolt's case he's not even best in his division. Tough call for top 3yr old male pacer but give me Thinking Out Loud in a close vote over ARocknroll Dance.
-
i believe pete's choice to scratch would have held much more water if he had won his heat and had the rail in the next heat

Whoever wins the Breeders Crown. idunno
-
Duer- either. Check Me Out has been so dominant in her division, I would probably abstain, or if Maven get the jump on her somewhere, put her on top of the division.
-
i was reading the rules on the L.B.J. it was kindy funny cause i dont remember reading anything saying you had to race in both heats. unless i misread something it was the decision of the parties in charge not to race his horse in the final. he wasnt going to get horse of the year anyway. maybe he didnt feel like it wasnt a good day for his horse. maybe he knew something no one else does. so until anyone here is put in the same position. dont be hatin

You should know he announced this strategy a week or two BEFORE the Jug so it wasn't something that happened that day.
My opinion is that he sure as hell could've won 3 yo Horse of the Year (until last week's poor result, which was karma) by winning the Jug & BC.

He is a great colt, but not HOY material in my opinion. He is an overachiever that really never was quite the best, even before the Jug, in my eyes.
