Ripley "full of it"
« on: March 27, 2012, 11:01:31 AM »
from July 1943 HB's and Art Hinrich's "Just Siftings' column:

Believe It or Not, this is one time Bob Ripley grabbed one out of his brine barrel that has had repercussions, and for the very correct Mr. Ripley to make an error in his much-read declaration of fact features that have a worldwide circulation, is indeed something for us lesser lights to chortle over' albeit, without feeling or rancor. Art. Thomas, manager of radio station WJAG, Norfolk, Neb., took him to task when Ripley declared: "A race horse born on December 31st was two years old the next day." Mr. Thomas corrected him with the following: "A race horse is not considered one year old the day it is born. Consult the Jockey Club. A horse is a year old on January 1, following birth."

But the insistent Mr. Ripley replied by letter: "A race horse is considered one year old the day it is born. An additional year is added each New Year's Day. A horse born on December 31st would be one year old the day it was born. The next day, January 1st, it would be considered two years old. A race horse born June 1st, would be one year old the day it was born. Within 7 months after its birth the horse would be considered a two-year-old." (Signed
