Sometimes I hate Being In The Horse Business
« on: February 24, 2013, 09:45:41 AM »
My  Bride's 20 something year old saddle mare developed a severe case of laminitus that was going to take her life in a horrible way. After not sleeping all night, I put her down on the family farm at daybreak. My son was there with a backhoe to finish things off. Her big brown eyes trusted me up to the last minute. I sometimes regret how close I get to my animals. It's like losing family when they go. I know we did the right thing, but it still makes feel like some kind of demon. I hope Ruby is frolicking through horse heaven (pain free) right now. Miss you, Big Girl!

Tough one Bill.
I recently had to have our old standardbred put down due to the fact that he had foundered. Saw it coming early but could do nothing to really prevent it, just slowed it down a bit and probably created some suffering on Punch's part. Other than having a dog euthanized couple of years ago it was one of the toughest things I've ever had to do.
I still see that big sob up on the hill in back at times.
I know the consequences of getting too close to an animal. They become almost human in our minds at least. Feed them and care for them for years, just like your kids, and then have to do something like this........................................tough one !!
You can be pretty sure there is tyranny in the country when the government pleads the fifth
Amendment !!

My sympathy Bill... redrose    When I had to put a horse down,I left the barn as the vet pulled up. I didn't show back up till the next day. That was my routine and would still be if I was still in the Biz.

Makes me wonder if poor Capone has his chores done yet, and Rubys trailer unloaded.

She and Capone are running and playing together right now. He's biting her in her big red ass, and she's kicking the snot out of him. Have fun kids!
