OT- Havng a problem with this,
« on: December 18, 2012, 08:12:11 AM »
As a Jew, I am not offended by being wished Merry Christmas or happy holidays by anyone. It does not bother me in the least when I get religious themed Christmas cards or when someone invokes Jesus' name in a grace before meals.
Yet, I am having problems with a post making the rounds on Facebook, a "poem" that starts... "twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate." It goes on to talk about Jesus saving them, etc.
At least one of the victims (Noah Pozner) was Jewish and for some reason this "poem" bothered me a little. Any of you amateur Dr. Phil's out there want to take a stab at why?

I actually have a big problem with all of the FB posts about the attacks. People glorify these murdering goofs when they should be ignored in my opinion.

Now if there is indeed a Heaven, I am very sure that all of these children went straight there- Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Atheist, Hindu...one and all.

Amen

Gary you are wrong........the Facebook posts about these children glorify their lives not the killers.  The more of their pictures and stories are posted the more I want to read them..........if my child was one of them I would take comfort in millions of people gain insight into their brief lives.

Keith........as you say you do not take offense into being wished Merry Christmas why would you be offended by a Heavenly being taking these children in?  Doesn't the jewish faith support the notion of Heaven?

In my journey with my faith one of my main concerns is.......how can only I, as a believer in Christ the savior be welcomed into Heaven?  I can not wrap my mind around wonderful caring loving people of other faiths not benefiting from eternal glory.

One Sunday our pastor gave a sermon along the same lines and he said........"I do not know how Jews, Muslims, Hindus, ect are getting into the kingdom of Heaven and I am not saying they won't........but I know how I am getting in and it's by the blood of Jesus."

I guess what I am saying is.....even if you don't believe Jesus Christ is your savior can you just think of Him as one of the many angles gathering those precious children.

Now I am crying again.

There are all kinds of things in this world that wouldn't normally bother me, but at one certain point, they get under my skin like a tick.   Could it be that this happened just as your holiday was ending?  That you were possibly more in that frame of mind?   A very holy time for you?     Either way, it doesn't matter,  it bothered you.   I believe what Gary said, it is giving those whacko's way too much thought,  too much credence.   As much as this whole thing breaks my heart........I don't need to be told of every funeral........I don't need to know that he smashed his computer before.......I just know that I need to think of those 26 who lost their lives and pray for their families.

Amy, old Gary D. is never (or at worst very, very rarely) wrong. People who disagree with old Gary D. are generally always wrong.

Stearing away from this on FB. And in general.

This isnt a time for political comments.

We are all hurting.

I am pretty cold blooded. And dont get very emotional about anything.
This was the most devastating act in my lifetime.

I am letting people deal with it in thier own ways.
The only thing that is really pissing me off is the people trying to use this for political gain.

Giss, as you know I too, am Jewish.  I do not have a problem with any poetry or piece of literature describing a "heavenly" entrance into the after life.

The Jewish religion believes in the soul & reincarnation.  I have come to believe (through my readings in psychiatry) that the soul lives many lives.  Besides that belief, most everyone knows that Jesus was a Jew, likely a rabbi with a large following.

As for the Facebook posts, I think FB sucks, in general.  It's usually the first place that people express their hatred & hateful political positions.

Never knew that the Jewish Religion believes in reincarnation. I love learning new things.

Not only in reincarnation but also of a heaven & hell.  The "hell" referred to in Judaism is not like the Christian hell of purgatory.  For most who do not "qualify" for heaven, there is a period of not more than 12 months that is more of a time of reflection & replays the moments where the soul learns the correct actions of their worst moments, in order to avoid making those mistakes & ultimately bettering the world.

Only real evil-doers are subjected to 12 months of punishment.  That is for people like Barack Obama!  It is believed that the punishment includes replays of the Jets-Titans MNF game.

The Jewish religion also believes that there are no differences at all in the religion chosen during one's lifetime.  The only things that matter are good deeds, performed out of love or duty, not in order to qualify for rewards in the after-life.

I believe there has been a revision, disqualifying muslims.  rflmao1

Seriously though, a great book to read on reincarnation is "Many Lives, Many Masters" by Brian Weiss.  You'll either be a total believer in reincarnation or you'll think he's full of shit.  It has no religious references.

I started life out as a Catholic wher we were taught all non-Catholics were Pagans and destined to Hell. They've evolved some since. They taught about Purgatory, which sounds a lot like taking a mullgan to me. If there's a Heaven (and I hope there there is) I think your deeds & kindness make way more difference than what kind of chapel you go to.

Non-affilated now but still a believer.

I brought it up here because I hoped we could have an intelligent conversation, which (other than Gary, we have rflmao1)

Amy- I don't know why I have an issue with it, which is why I am hoping for some "guidance."

Joani- you may be close.

Dolfan- Yes, Jesus was a rabbi and died believing he was Jewish. In fact, we refer to him as the ultimate Reformed Jew, and not as a demeaning term. I did not post the entire poem-- it is out there for those who wish. Had it just been "heavenly" I would not have had an issue, but I took it to be a very "narrow" view of what Jesus was/is/would do and that is where I had the problem.
