Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving
« on: November 14, 2012, 06:31:30 PM »
I am getting annoyed by the amount of stores that are opening Thanksgiving evening.  Are people getting that greedy now looking to save a few bucks that they will ruin someone else's holiday?  I am sure a lot of these people that will be out shopping are bitching about how companies don't provide any benefits to their employees.  If stores are opening at 8 people are going to have to leave their house around 5 or 6 pm.

I say that not really caring if I worked holidays myself but know that they are more special to others.

At one time I was Chief Engineer in steam gereration plant and none of the of guys wanted to work on holidays. I volunteered to cover for all of them because I got double-time and a half, and all we had to do was schedule the holiday meal after I got off work. Easy money and nobody around to bug you.  8)

I understand essential jobs having to be performed on a holiday.........but I don't consider early shopping as "essential".............continual degradation of the family.

"Family"?  That's not important anymore.  Not under the current scheme of things.  All we need is our rich uncle Sam.
He will provide everything we need, whether we want it or not!
Besides, who are we thanking?  It can't be God, that's not allowed.  Thanksgiving should be renamed Government Appreciation Day.

I always laughed at my old jobs that were open most holidays when people that were Atheists were always the first ones to say they wanted off Christmas Eve or Easter.

Once these retailers take away Thanksgiving they will start creeping up on Christmas getting people to come in with their gift cards.

Agreed.  Here is the one holiday with no religious attachments - a purely American holiday, one that has always encouraged families to be together.  A beautiful holiday, loaded with great traditions.

The last couple of years, retailers here have opened at midnight, which not only seemed cool but the beginning of another fun tradition.  After all, the 5 a.m. openings were not my thing but obviously far before midnight, eating, football & family time has ended.

Opening earlier in the day just sucks, especially for people in retail.

I hate to shop anyway, so no way I'd go shopping on Black Friday. If you own horses you never really get a day off anyway, you just shorten it by not jogging or training.

Enjoy the holiday everybody!
