Outstanding article by Mike Paradise about the correlation between handle and purses in Chicago.

Obviously the key is to get more of the takeout into the  horsemen's account so purses could go up.  We won't get sloits so finding a way to do this would be a huge help. Maybe this should be the focus of the IHHA going forward.  I know a lot of effort has gone into getting slots, but as time drags on, that seems less and less likely. With handle going up and the purse account going down, how can this increased handle continue to thrive?  The greedy track owners should realize that their windfall won't last unless more is invested in purses.  Bettors like to wager on the big mile track and a way to keep the momentum going has to be found.  With the situation in Canada, more horses would be available if the purses could be increased,

Spot on, Hal. If the Johnstons were'nt so greedy they could end up with more money. Better purses=better horses & trainers=bigger handle... everybody is better off, including the tracks and the bettors.

Might explain why the tracks seem to invest in OTBs while the track itself sees no improvements. They WANT you to bet at the OTB so their take is greater?

I'm sure that is part of it.  But, bettors just prefer to make bets at OTB's or online.
This is true all over the country.  If the built all new facilities at Maywood and Balmoral , it still would be true.  Even a die hard like me only goes to the track one time a week.  80% of my bets are made online or st the OTB

it's the same for most us, unfortunately the consequences of not wagering on the live racing, further degrades the quality, oh horses, horsemen and racing. In fact. . .we're really contributing to the downfall of the industry were supposed to support and acknowledge.
Similar to "Buy American".

I know this sounds like cutting off your nose to spite your face but cancel/cease all signals going to the ADW's and negotiate a better split with the tracks on the OTB's
