Title: OT didn't seem to work as planned for Retailers
Post by: Jeremy on November 25, 2011, 02:53:55 AM
Got to JC Penney at 4:10 to get a snow globe for my mother and niece pretty good size crowd there but I was out quick.  Decided to see what Best Buy was like and other than a few door busters they had a ton of other things they probably expected to sell out.  There was no one in line purchasing and the store was about as busy as a typical weekday morning.  Decided to see what Target was like and they were about as dead as Best Buy, but I did get an Icee because how often can you get one at 4:45am?  Looking at the workers you can tell they are all almost zombies at this point so everyone should say a prayer they all make it home without falling asleep behind the wheel.  At Lowe's I was amazed at how many people were buying two or three ladders just because they were $20.

I think all the retailers that opened up at midnight will see that their plan backfired because it succeeded in pissing some people off, and it doesn't seem they are going to get more sales as a result.  I wouldn't be surprised if it hurt them more because once people got the good stuff they moved on to the mall where the stores opened up at 4 5 or 6.

just got back from Staples.  They had coffee and donuts for early customers, they opened at 6 and their employees seemed awake and in a better mood.  They had a worker suggestive sell batteries as you get 100% back in rewards, but I told her that I was paying for my purchase with Staples Rewards and when you do that you don't end up getting the money back.  She seemed worried that I was correct like she didn't want people coming back and being mad at her and asked one of the higher ups about it when he walked by.  Luckily if there is any problem I was there making the purchase as Amy's oldest son.

The stores opening last night hacked me off...........if I had one bone of desire to shop I would avoid them like the plague just for principal......but seeing how shopping is as enjoyable to me as my Aunt Flo they need not worry.

Often the best deals are just tesers.  Wal-Mart had 65 inch TVs for$998, but the small print said 1 or 2 per store!  I will wait for the deaparation deals later!!!

I got a report from my sister-in-law.  She went to Wal Mart at 11pm last night.  All 32 checkouts were open and there were 25-30 people in line at each one.  Then she went to the mall.  Had to park 4 blocks away.  People in Illinois must have more money to spend.

we just have fast checkout counters.  good luck to all the people hiding a 65" tv or a washer and dryer for a month.

I don't think most people buy such things for gifts.  If I bought my wife a washer and dryer for Christmas, she would hit me over the head with the iron I got her last year!

My daughter's laptop crashed (hard drive failure-good timing, at least) so she headed to WalMart with Ms. Giss for the $258 HP special. They had plenty in stock (arrived at 11:55) and the lines were shorter than they usually are at this store. My sis-in-law works in marketing for a major department store chain (no names, but rhymes with Shmarget) and was tasked to drive around and monitor lines and displays locally (even though not based here). Lines short everywhere both last nigth and this early AM.
Looking at the so-called door busters, very few really "busted" me to the point of thinking of getting up early, other than a $20 video camera at Dollar General, of all places.

I have a device that you can hook plug an internal hard drive into (after you take it out) and the other side plugs into a USB port that sometimes can get the information off of a hard drive.  I can get it to Amy Hollar of Northfield Park fame if you wanted to borrow it in an attempt to save some data.

The good part is one of the things I got was something I am going to make him get for you.  Yes it was cheap and yes I know you want it.

I recieved a bunch of cyber Monday ads that look super... and they don't have the limited supplies that the Black Friday sales had. Might take advantage of some of those. Plus, I hate to shop and detest crowds. Could be a dream come true for me.

Probably... my all-in-one is getting long in the tooth and not performing all that great, and my laptop got hit with a vicious bug, (I'd like to kick whoever wrote it in the 'nads) so I might be looking for a replacement if repairs don't fix it. Also have to buy a puter and printer for the new office at the VFW.

how long ago did you get the virus ?  If you know the exact date you can 'go back' to before you got the virus which will make it easier to try to get rid of.

go back meaning system restore.

Very recent (2 days maybe) but the laptop won't even come on-line. It starts to reboot then goes stone dead and all the lights go out. Norton suggested an update after it detected the bug. I did the update and now it won't restart.

Not sure how far its getting, but as soon as you go online try hitting the f8 key a few times

If you get to some options on what you can do select 'safe mode with command prompts'

in a minute or so if you are lucky you will get a screen that looks like dos
type in rstrui.exe which brings up the system restore

If this doesn't work we can try something else

Ma's great-nephew made her some DVDs of VHS tapes of some races and she can't get them to play.  I told her to bring them up next week and we would get you to look at them if I can't get them to play either...............you are like an electronic elf this time of year.

What is she trying to play them on? It wouldn't surprise me if the disks that were use were not compatible with her player.  If she brings them to you they might play on your equipment.  written on the center part of the DVDs is probably either DVD-R or DVD+R and her player may not be able to play the other one.

I will bring the discs up next week.  I have an old DVD so you could be right.  I don't know a thing about this stuff.  I tried them on my computer and they won't play on it either.

Jeremy, I really appreciate the help you've given live & in pm's.
As of this afternoon my laptop is the "cause celebre" at the local geek shop. There are 3 of them playing with it trying to figure what the hell is wrong with it. (all computer majors)

They warned that it might require a replacement, but they are fascinated with trying to figure out what the bug is. I'm paying the minimum service fee regardless... they're just intrigued by the cause.

I'll have to limp for awhile on the old desktop, since the Christmas budget is pretty well obligated for the time being.

A question for all: Is it worth the added cost to switch to Apple? I've heard great things.

When it comes to Apple, there is the added initial cost of the system, but they maintain their value so you can sell it for more after a few years.  I don't know anyone that doesn't personally like their Apple product whether it is a computer, iphone or ipad.
