Just talked to Bill Zendt. He said they are awaiting the results from an MRI of Palone's neck and shoulders. He was life-flighted because his head hit the ground so hard they feared brain trauma. The tests on the brain came back ok, but he is in a lot of pain from his neck and shoulder region.

Thank you sir, but the credit goes to Pezz, who informed me both that this site was down and of the accident, both while I was grocery shopping.

In addition to sharing the hopes that the driver are OK, I ask this:  Why did the judges not declare the race no contest?  Why did they allow the results to stand?  Is this something that is at the discretion of the judges or is there some official rule about the number of horses to actually finish the race, etc.?

Not sure what the rule is, but I would not punish the bettors who had the winning numbers. I would never ever ever make a race a non-contest. No sense alienating the few bettors we still have left.

At the beginning of the broadcast of the Meadows Live racing show on Tuesday at 12:30 pm, announcer Roger Huston reported that he spoke with Bethann Palone, wife of driver Dave Palone, shortly before going on the air and she reported that her husband was up and walking around in his room at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Bethann Palone told Huston that x-rays of her husband's shoulder and neck were negative, but that he was still in severe pain in the neck area and more tests are likely.

Palone Playing It Day By Day

Dave Palone was able to laugh on Wednesday afternoon,
not quite 48 hours since he had been put on a stretcher and
loaded into a helicopter for a flight to the trauma unit at Allegheny
General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for the post, Elgin. When you hit that limestone surface at race speed it's like power grinder against your skin. Thankfully that's usually the quickest thing to heal. Dem bones take awhile... joints & nerves even longer. Glad Palone's improving. thumbsup

I suppose it may come down to how much pain Palone can stand without knocking it down with opiates like Oxycontin and Oxycodone. In some cases the over the counter stuff just won

I have two or three fusions in my cervical spine that don't hurt me a bit. Matter of fact, that is the only part of my body that generally doesn't hurt. The surgeon I have is truly one of the best on Earth, and his neurosurgeon/partner is even more highly regarded.

As far as pain control, if I hurt real, real badly, I will take four ibuprofen along with two extra strength tylenol at one time. My doctor said this is just as strong as taking lortab, sans the opiate side effects and addiction qualities.

The problem is it won't pass a piss test if they test Dave. He doesn't need a suspension on top of the injury. I'm not anti-cannabis (even though it doesn't agree with me) but random drug testing is the rule here, and I imagine elsewhere.

Yeah but when the other doc's say boy you were right about having A LOT of metal in your neck, then you know you have it. I've seen x-rays of it and it looks like Barboro's leg after he had all the metal screws and stuff. Plus I've taken 5 motrins at once didn't do a thing. Surgeon now wants to put a pain pump in me and trust me I'll go through ANOTHER surgery if it helps. You really don't want to know how many surgeries I have had!! Probably more than all the members combined! rflmao1 At least I'm still kicking?

I know you just have to dust yourself off and crawl back into the bike, but when you hit your 50's and are so sore, it might be more prudent to wait a bit.  In spite of the thousands of miles I logged, I was never tossed onto the track. I came close a couple times and it scared the crap out of me.  Hope it turns out OK.
Interesting dilema for bettors.  Do you say he's not 100% and toss him or do you say , he's out to prove something and play him.  I would guess the latter, since he is the winningest driver ever.

Palone To Drive Tonight at Meadows; Breeders
Crown Plans Still Up In Air
By Bill Finley

Driver Dave Palone, banged up in a spill Monday at The
Meadows, will drive tonight at his home track, after which
he will make a decision about his availability for the Breeders
Crown.
Palone did not suffer any
broken bone sin the accident,
but says he is still banged up
and doesn't want to drive in the
Breeders Crown unless he
feels he can be at his very
best.
"I am still taking it a day at a
time," he said. "I thought I'd go
in in (Friday night) and spin a
couple. If I don't feel right I am
not going to take a chance and
do that to Ronnie (Burke) or
the owners. They're good buddies
of mine and Sweet Lou
been so good to me. I am optimistic
that I will drive Saturday,
but I won't drive him if I don't
think I can go in there at full tilt.
We'll see how it feels."
Palone has five drivers on the Breeders Crown card:
Sweet Lou (3yo male pace); Mattie Terror Girl (2yo filly
pace); Frau Blucher (2yo filly trot); Economy Terror (3yo
filly pace); Bluff 33yo filly trot).
Palone was involved in a five-horse spill that looked
about as scary as they get.
"I'm just a little bit kinked up still," he said. "I am really
shocked that I didn't break something because I have
fallen a lot softer than that and had broken bones, so I
don't know how I walked away without anything broken.
But thank goodness I did. I thought I broke both shoulders
when it happened. The way I landed I jammed my neck
and both shoulders and had a lot of road rash, a lot of skin
tore off. The main thing was my shoulders hurt because I
broke my shoulder couple of years ago. I was really
shocked when x-rays came back clean on those. "
Palone said he isn't sure yet if he will honor all his drives
at The Meadows. He said he had spoken to the tracks'
judges and they said they will allow him to drive in only a
few races if that is his plan.
"If I don't think I can make speed and move a horse on
Saturday I won't drive," he said. "Unless I am relatively pain
free I will tell the trainers I can't do it. They shouldn't want it
any other way. You're talking about a lot of money and a lot
of prestige. I know my capabilities pretty well and I think I'll
be fine, but I'll know more tomorrow.

Through the eighth at The Meadows, Palone won with 2/5 Jesuitical Hanover and 1/5 Sweet Ben. He also drove the third place finisher in the fifth and the fourth place finisher in the seventh.

Doubt it had anything to do with Palone being cheap it was more of the thought of Sears crossing the wire with Sweet Lou and winning the Breeders Crown.

Tough luck... hope it wasn't your primary arm. I got kicked in the right hand by a yearling once and it did alot of breakage. Only the tips of my fingers were outside the cast. The Doc asked if I was righthanded. I said yes and he chuckled and said, "You're going to find  that hardest thing to do lefthanded is brush your teeth & wipe your butt... I had the same cast once." Boy was he right. That was a very long 11 weeks.

Of course it's primary hand. My luck is that kind...but on the positive side very little pain. Taking motrin 600 for swelling. Will hook up with ortho this week. Xray shows bone crumbled on itself but is not displaced. My hand was on her hip when elbow hit solid surface very loud crack. Still got her branded 2 others there and finished up other appointment near IL line before returning in time to catch Grey's. I did stop and get wrist brace and aspercreme before proceeding to drive on. Walk in dr has me in long plastic splint for now.

Fortunately never broke either arm, but when I was in the hospital for 9 weeks, another person had to wipe my butt for the first several weeks. Talk about humiliating-another dude wiping your ass.

Every time I come up with a get-rich quick scheme, I remember the idea of another guy messing with my ass and it keeps me mostly honest.  ;D

If I had thought of a bidet I would have sprung for the money. I also had a job where I drove about 240-300 miles a day. It's amazing how long you can 'hold it' so you can do it at home.

I think the man could drive with anyone, anywhere, anytime. Because Brennen wasn't on the grand circuit

much this year and not at woodbine at all does that make him a nothing ? Nope ! Not in my book anyway.
