St. Elmo Hero wins Balmoral qualifier

Despite racing into a stiff headwind in the Balmoral Park stretch, St. Elmo Hero won a qualifier Wednesday morning in 1:56.3 with Pat Curtin driving. Now six, St. Elmo Hero was making his first appearance since finishing fourth last November in the American National at Balmoral, a race that capped off a season that saw the pacer stretch a career-opening win streak to 25 before finally coming up short.

Owner John Barnard told harnessracing.com shortly after the qualifier that the son of Western Hero will head shortly to Woodbine for the opening round of the Spring Pacing Championship Series on Saturday, March 24. St. Elmo Hero was scheduled to start in last year's Spring Pacing Championship but was not entered after a double punch of sickness and a quarter crack caused a five-week layoff.

Despite being run into by Jamieson's Sonic Dancer, Modern Legend crushes the field at 1-9.

Since I saw a lot of his victories, including his first, in 2010, I root for Elmo.  Hope he stays sound this year and kicks some butt.

I love your analysis 

I really like Elmo tonight. Golden Receiver loves the Big M but if I remember correctly doesn't fare as well at the WEG tracks. (I'll look at old forms later). Elmo paced with all the Big Boys last year and while he didn't win much he was very competative. Other than GR this field isn't any better than an Open/Inv field, unproven against top notch invaders. I see Jody leaving (I hope) and somehow sitting a trip behind GR. Elmo paced home a back half of 53.4 while racing first over and gets a huge driver upgrade (Donk will agree). GR gets a new pilot which may not hurt but definitely won't improve.

I love Elmo and think he has a big a heart as any race horse has ever had. I also think he will not be

anywhere near this class only because of his connections inexperience of ever having a horse with his

potential and willing to win. I know he won a lot of races but I give him all the credit and if you know

me I have said this since he started stepping up to meet the big boys. I just hope they take care of

him and classify him correctly so he can stay healthy and continue to show what a big hearted animal

he is.

Golden Reciever wins in 150.0. Elmo a real good 2nd as they came home 26.1


As far as GR is concerned, I think the biggest reson he has improved so much might be the best betting angle in all of harness racing. The Andy Off Angle.......
