Stan "The Man" was one of the all time greats I saw play live.  Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Bara, Whitey Ford, Bob Gibson Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente Sandy Kolfax, were among other greats I saw and many others.  It is my understanding that the Pope is coming out of retirement and will put on the uniform again and play a game!  It would be nice if video of it was posted on Utube.  Then LVGD and I could analyze his swing.  I could time his speed to first base if he got a hit.

I got to meet Stan The Man when he was Grand Marshal of the Hambo parade at DuQuoin years ago. He was incredibly friendly. After we talked a bit, I asked if it was ok to take a photo. He said sure! I've still got it somewhere. Like the total dumbass I am, I had a buddy with me that was a Texan who could give a shit less about the Cardinals. I took the picture instead of handing my bud the camera and letting me get a pic of me and The Legend together.

He was so nice to me. RIP Stan "The Man".

Way, way back right after the war years, sometime in the late 40's Stan made an appearance at Lenzi Field near Hodgkins. My Dad pitched for the semi-pro team Cole Lenzi fielded each year and he voluntered to throw a couple to Stan. To this day they are still looking for those couple of baseballs Musial hit over the right field fence.  The old man will be waiting for Musial when they meet up there to ask him how he knew it was a change that he hit about 500 feet.
Lenzi Field was at the intersection of Joliet Road (US66) and East Avenue just north of Hodgkins. Spent many hours shagging fly balls in their rock hard outfield.

An old dear friend of mine (who was like a second Dad to me after I lost mine) who was a great baseball player told me he got in a fundraiser baseball game. The Big Draw was the great pro pitcher Hoyt Willhelm.(sp) Frank said that he went into the game all cocky because he could hit off of any pitcher. He said that after 9 innings of no-hit baseball he was glad it was over, because all of the best locals looked like dumb children against a pro pitcher. (seem to remember Hoyt as a knuckle-baller)

Not in anyway trying to derail the thread. Just saying the guys who make it to "The Bigs" are at a far different level than most.

To quote my dear late friend Frank: "He made our best look like a bunch of retarded 3rd graders!" Major leaguers are so much better than the rest of us that it's unbelievable. It doesn't look that way because they are always against the others that made it to "The Bigs".

I'd never make it to the minors at my best. It's probably some kind of discrimination thing. I'd sue, but no lawyers want to take my case because I don't have any money, or baseball talent. I think I'll sue the lawyers. Oh yeah...that ain't gonna work either. Damn!

Classy man. Had the privillege of meeting him. The" greatest living Major Leaguer" is no longer with us. Also a temendously underrated player in many parts of the country.
