Chrysler Bailout
« on: October 30, 2012, 09:22:38 AM »
Well... billions of taxpayer dollars were spent to bailout floundering American car companies. The stockholders of those companies were just plain screwed when Obama took them over. (many are retirees like your Grandma) He gave a big equity of stock to the UAW. (United Auto Workers Union)

Then The Italians (Fiat) ended up owning Chrysler. Now they plan to move production of Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep to China, and then ship them back to the US for sale. There won't be any unemployed UAW workers able to buy them. Ford didn't take the bailout. Their employees ain't gonna buy anything but a Ford.

So much for wealth redistribution. Taxpayers took it in the kiester again. As Ronald Reagan said: "Government isn't the answer to the problem... government IS the problem."

It was only a matter of time until this took place.  The company was saved by Billions of taxpayer dollars so a foriegn company could ship the jobs to China.  Somehow, it must be Bush's or Romney's fault.   Many many companies go belly-up.  It does not necessarily mean the company will go out of business. Many emege from bankruptcy stronger than ever.  What happened in the auto bailout was the saving of Union jobs.  That's why it took place, so the unions would not have to make as many concessions as they would have if the company went bankrupt.
As JS pointed out, many stockholders and bondholders where left with nothing.  Under bankruptcy, they may have got a least something.  The big boys were out of these stocks and bonds liong before.  The little guys got hurt bad.  Many employees and retired workers had mioney in the stock and bonds.
Many foreign companies that have plants in the US, like Hyundai and Toyota, have the plants in non-union Southern states. I think it is cheaper for a Japanese company to build a car in the USA rather than Japan, as long as it's not a union shop. The Korean companies, I don't know about.  I do know several people that own Hyundais and they all said they would never buy another one.

At what point does it become more American to buy a Honda made in Ohio vs a GM made in Mexico?

I'm driving around here in the Detroit area, and bumper stickers for either Obama or Romney are almost non-existent, the same for lawn signs.  Why aren't all the GM cars here plastered with Obama bumper stickers?

That's true, but with their billions of dollars of assets, they might have.

And the day George W. Bush bailed out the first bank, I quit being a republican. No real republican would have bailed either the banks or the car companies out.

I am a Conservative first. I'm usually forced to vote for a Republican because the Democrats are so liberal. I would vote Libertarian if I thought one could ever win. The Tea Party is the best thing that ever happened to the present Republican Party.
