Wounded veterans heading to White Sox Fantasy Camp
« on: January 06, 2012, 05:28:16 AM »
Four years ago, Matthew Ritenour would have been thankful to walk, much less play baseball.

In 10 days the former U.S. Army staff sergeant and Huntley resident is penciled in to be the first baseman for Team Salute Inc. at the Chicago White Sox Fantasy Camp in Glendale, Ariz.

White Sox Fantasy Baseball Camp site Ritenour, 36, is a presidential Silver Star recipient and one of a group of seven wounded military veterans given the opportunity to attend the White Sox Fantasy Camp, courtesy of the White Sox, Salute Inc. and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

On Sept. 4, 2007, Ritenour and his unit fought against 180 Taliban fighters who attacked their base in southern Afghanistan. Although he was shot in the head and partially paralyzed during the battle, Ritenour fought on, encouraging nearby soldiers and using a radio to call in mortar fire on the enemy.

Maybe the Sox should send a scout to watch the 1st guy (Matt) with the ankle that doesn't move much.. I'm sure he won't strike out as much as Dunn and Even with that ankle,he has to be faster than Paulie !!!   idunno

No!! ....Great stuff! Guys like Ritenour deserve everything a grateful country can produce. He's a true hero. Thirty years ago folks like him would have been wiping spit off of his 'hat' when the California hippies "welcomed" him home. It's a little different world today. Not "better" just different.
Not only that he'll be welcomed to the Sux camp by a manager who can be understood when speaking.
You can be pretty sure there is tyranny in the country when the government pleads the fifth
Amendment !!
