Guaranteed Starter Bonus At Woodbine
« on: December 18, 2011, 03:49:30 PM »

I am not sure if any other track does this but Woodbine pays $300 to owners whose horses finish 6th or worse in a race.

I am sure it helps to defray costs such as shipping, vet, shoeing etc.

If any other track pays starter bonus, I would love to hear about it.

I wonder if they pay the drivers anything who don't pick up a check in a race.

If you had a mare race 5 times at Woodbine and she finished last every time, then brought it to Northfield it might only fit in the highest level condition.

If you are referring to the money earned by the mare, I don't think the $300 goes into the total money earned account.

One problem that I see.
Horses that come up a little sick or lame the morning of the race will just show up and halfhearted race to collect the $300. Without the $300 they would be scratched.
IMHO unfair to the horse and better.

That would only happen if the on track vet is sleeping on the job.

Back when this meet began in August at Cal Expo, a $50 fee was paid to all horses that finished out of the money for about the 1st month or maybe a little longer.  When you look at our purse structure vs Woodbine, I think we were paying more, relatively speaking.   ;D

Its sad if it does.

Knowingly entering a sick horse or a lame horse in a race can be very dangerous not only to the driver of the horse but to other drivers in the race sometimes with serious consequences.

An incompetent vet would not last long at a track like Woodbine.
