Hal, I'd add that a driver cannot fight the horse the whole mile & expect the horse to have anything at all.  The horse tires just from fighting!

To all who would rather have TTR: Would you change your mind if Kingcole had a trainer who figured out how to rate him?

These performances & lack of success everywhere but the timer fall directly on the shoulders of the trainer, not the driver.  If he rates & then falters, he's undoubtedly an Its Fritz.

You are right on the money, Dolfan. If the trainer can't figure out how to make the horse controllable, the driver is screwed. I've been on both ends of it. Many with great speed are hard to control... that's when good trainers have to do the hard work. There's a reason why really good trainers thrive. (and have a hard time sleeping)l
