Farm holds contest to name Rachel Alexandra's colt

She became Horse of the Year in 2009, and now Rachel Alexandra has a new title, Mom.

Rachel's little boy is just a few weeks old, but no one knows what to call him yet, and the stakes are high to find a name for the colt with quite the pedigree.

When she became the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness, Rachel Alexandra gained a reputation for beating the boys. With her racing days behind her, retirement has been good to Rachel. She lives right across from her best friend, Hot Dixie Chick, and now has a little boy of her own. "She's been a good mother, just a perfect mother," Farm Manager Garry Megibben said.

Megibben looks after Rachel, who in turn, looks after her first born, but she needs your help coming up with a name. Stone Street Farms is holding a contest to name Rachel's colt, and not just any name will do. Just as his mother's name still rings out in the racing world, his father, Curlin is no slouch either. "Between the mother and father, they've got three horse of the year titles," Megibben said.

Whoever comes up with the winning name gets to spend two nights at the farm's guest house to get an up-close look at their namesake.

"This guy here," Megibben said of the colt, "I mean, he's obviously going to get every shot in the world."

With her own glory days behind her, these days Rachel is like any proud parent. "It's kind of like your kids, I mean, you just hope and you dream that they do maybe all the things that you didn't do yourself, but yeah, there's nothing to think that he can't be great," Megibben said.
