Bert Beachy was the best. Allowed me the chance to participate in the Billings ten or so years back when I was messing around with that. They would ALWAYS have a horse for me. And by horse, I mean in the basic sense of the word. It had four legs and a tail and was hicthed to a sulky.
One year at Greenville he had me on a horse named Moorelands Ruggles. Trader Bud Hatfield was a huge favorite in the cheapest divisions and we went off the longest shot in the field at 42-1. From the rail I got away 2nd and sat their the whole time, never getting within 3-4 lenghts of Hatfield, but holding off a horse in the stretch to get the place money. I get back to the barn and Bert and Dean were super excited. "He raced good," Bert said. "Better than yesterday. He finished third in a maiden." "He raced yesterday?" I asked. "Yep. We didn;t want to tell you because we thought you would be scared to drive him."
