After a weekend and generally a meet in which Ron Burke seemed untouchable many around the various off track wagering facilities and racetracks from coast to coast are buzzing.
What is the general consensus here of this massive display of authoritarianism?
Is Ron the greatest trainer since Haughton or Dancer?
Will any other trainer be able to make a stand or will Ron be a run away?
The critics attacked Pena who's success was remarkably similar, they are now talking about Mr. Burke now. Can he handle the heat?
Discuss.

He has the greatest numbers in regards to amount of horses.
His $$$ numbers are going to look even better when you consider he trains a lot great horses past the age of 3... where they can make up around 20% of his purse winnings because the best competition doesn't always stick around.
I don't get what you mean that he will be a run away.
His UTRS is not even in the top 50.
Also Yannick's UDRS is .433 vs .370 UTRS for Burke. Looks like his main driver is winning with everyone.
Another main driver David Palone is .378

Ron Burke is without a doubt a genius. He'd have been successful in whatever endeavor he chose as his profession.
The entire Burke family are the hardest working people I've ever known. As long as I am in Nevada dealing cards, Ronnie will remain atop the list as the leading trainer. When and if I decide to sober up and return to training horses, he will be the second best trainer in the business.
;D

Who are the "they" you speak of ?? Do "they" have any history of training success at the elite (Grand Circuit) level by which "they" can judge others??
Burke may well be the next Haughton or Dancer but only extended success will provide a basis for that status,
Has he (Burke) been able to take a 15 claimer with a LTM of 1:55 and turn him into a sub 1:50 pacing monster inside of a weeks time ??
Last but not least, this seems to be your main purpose in life i.e. making totally unsubstansiated claims regarding various people who's entire life is tied up in the sport. These people have had no and I repeat NO cases brought forward that would be considered so serious that their reputation or livelyhood would be injured, yet you persist. Why and what is YOUR motive?? Don't even try the old "for the betterment of the sport" crap!!!

I met Ron Burke during Jug Week once about 3 years ago. I didn't know who he was and he didn't know who I was. He was very pleasant to me, but never lost track of what needed to be done. Checking equipment, taking temperatures, overseeing the care of his horses... making sure that every I was dotted, and every T was crossed. His success is very much influenced by his hard work and attention to detail. I always notice in still photos of his horses that they are perfectly "hung-up". Each foot hits the ground level and efficient, and the horses' stride is fully extended... and all are well conditioned. You don't get that out of a syringe.
-
The folks I was speaking off were some of the fellas who have seen a million races. No one who has the history of training elite horses. So by your standards I suppose they cannot judge others. But does a civil or criminal court magistrate have success at being a thief, murderer, or any other type of career criminal?
If the 15 claimer with a 55 mark to sub 50 is a Pena reference, I must have missed that one. I know he chopped time of many a claimer but never from 55 to sub 50. Please elaborate.
As for who I bring up, the majority are the big topics or the ones I am directly familiar with. Many have brought up Pena and for the most part I have strayed from those discussions except early on, once the misguided nonsense started I was out. Pena like Ron Burke has not had any cases so serious that his reputation should be destroyed yet it has been.
My motive is discussion and an attempt to clarify and understand my fellow posters, whether horse person or gambler. If 7 out of 10 people I encountered today and discussed yesterday's evenings big M card could only talk about Burke then obviously I would figure that the online posters would be willing to discuss it as well.
Of the folks I talked to some said he was genius, some said he was a criminal, and others said they just had to scratch there heads and wonder how he does it. This is evident on all the forums not just in my personal contacts.
I did not give an opinion and many times on topics like this I hold my opinion and let the forum do the discussion.
I am not pointing fingers at anyone or using any derogatory comments. I am simply trying to get a feel on where we are and where we are going.
Clamming up about these topics is what has cast a shadow on what when I was growing up was a prominent game. Had we talked about it, put things in the limelight, and if they were wrong corrected them, the game would surely be thriving today.

I think what Juice Junkies has said is true. Not that Burke stable is cheating, but that the sport is abuzz with people who think he is. Of the many harness lists and forums I belong to, there are plenty voicing that opinion. I know that he is a member here and many know him or have met him. As for myself, I will take their opinion that he is not. One thing that many are saying is "What if Pena had a night like that, people would be screaming to high heaven" We can claim that all the critics are disgruntled bettors or crackpots, but that is not the case. Whether we like it or not, the sad truth is that when anyone has a lot of success in this sport, the changes of chemical enhancement start flying. That is what it has come to and this mindset can only hurt the sport.
-
Can hurt the sport? HAS hurt the sport.
And, I'm sorry but I lay a great deal of the blame on horsemen themselves for perpetuating the witch hunts.

It is the nature of the beast in our business. Whenever anyone shows up year after year and is as successful as the Burke Brigade. rumors fly and tongues wag. Please consider the times we live in. the instant access to far flung places via cell phones and computers. voice, pictures, video via phone instantly allows trainers to be in far flung places from thier home base in seconds. put that in the equation with intelligent hands on horse knowledge you have a well oiled machine like the Burke Brigade. Burke is not the only man out their having success. He has a large inventory of horseflesh because that is what he wants. Other trainers doing the same thing are just as successful with smaller numbers. If you get luckey and sell a horse for some serious cash you upgrade the inventory and hope to keep the snowball going. and........................I think Pena has been screwed big time and trying to use ghost trainers was not smart. He has the horse knowledge but not the business smarts to control large numbers of horses.
There . that's my $5 bucks worth this am. Have a good day. redrose

Horsemen have shot themselves in the foot for years and years. Nowadays via internet it is just quicker, easier, and worldwide. not just the local cafe or bar anymore. global bullshit instantly. shootme

The Burkes are smart they have great help, great owners, they buy good stock. A great Family doesn't hurt, they are all team players!
Go Burke!!!
-
Burke's do not hide their secret for success. they buy good, sound horses without breathing issues, train them the way horses are supposed to be trained (hard), race them where they belong, and put the best drivers on their horses.
If a horse cannot take hard training, he does not generally do good for Burkes. Like Just Saying pointed out, Ron Burke does not miss a thing. He is up before dawn and watches the last horse race every night. I've even seen him race at night in Lexington, load the horses on the truck and drive to Pittsburgh immediately after...himself!
How many so called "elite" trainers would do that and then go straight to the barn?
Another secret to Burke's success is Mark Weaver, who will tell anyone who will listen that he alone is the reason for Ronnie's success. Mark sees things no other owner can see when watching prospective purchases.

I have no doubt that everything LVGD says about Ron is true. However, there are also a few supporters who expose this philoshiphy--my trainer is smart, hard working, has good owners and all others are jealous. However, unlike LVGD, they then go on to bash other high % trainers as cheats and POSs. Lets face it, every hard working trainer is not nearly as successful. This only causes more attacks on your trainer. As Amy and Beans have said, it looks like there is a penchant in the game for doing this.
I'm sure another factor in the Burke's success is that if they do get a horse that does not turn out as expected, they will get rid of it, albeit at a loss. You can't bat a .1000 . Knowing when to cut your losses is as important as anything. Some owners and trainers look at the horses almost as pets and are very slow to admit that they can't cut the mustard.

Mark Weaver has told me of many horses they bought for large prices that soon go into much lower priced claimers to try and recoup some losses. Every Delaware sale is loaded with Burke horses that are not as good as they hoped the horses would be under their regimen.
Success takes an entire team of good players. Ron Burke will also be the first to tell you that he has a top quality staff at each track or training center they stable horses. I really admire their operation. I can't see how Ronnie and Mickey Jr. keep everything in such perfect order. Like I said many times, if I can't or won't train myself and the horse is any stock at all, Burkes would be my first choice.
-
If you win races you are a cheater in this game period.....(sarcasm)......people do not grasp that training horses is a skill and with any skill in life people are going to be better then others. Do people try to gain an edge of course they do. The key with many of these trainers who have high win % is the ability to classify their horses correctly and race them where they can win.....How often do you see Burke, Coleman's of the world racing 50-1 horses in claimers? They aren't and its not because the bettors are all over them every time, it is because if they had horses with those odds they would just drop them down to where they can be 3-1.

How could they not be anyones first choice....they are punking the entire industry!
No secret on my theory, I have said it many times. Obviously they are not doing anything illegal or with the number of starters and tracks they would certainly be busted.......but do I think they have knowledge or a product (legal) that gives them an edge.... absolutely. Of course I said the same thing about Virgil Morgan for about 20 years!
I am just a common gambler and the one thing I am certain of is a 4 horse 1/5 entry and multible chalk winners a night is not a good thing!

here we go again While I was thrilled with the way my horses raced on the weekend, I knew that the acccusations would fly. The horses were in classes they should do well in and the barn in nj is sharp right now and yg has never been sharper. Now to juice junkies I will make the same deal to you that i offered flukemaster you put up 10 thosand vs my 100000 and you can have total access to my barn which is recorded by the way with 16 camera on a 30 day loop. If i cant win races anymore or you catch me cheating you keep the money. If not I keep the money ,you are welcome to stay as long as u like. Dont say u dont have time because 100000 will cover either your time or a group of peoples time

Ron, I am not challenging that you are cheating. I am trying to have a discussion. I surely cannot come for a hundred grand, though for 250,000 as a salary I would come and work 10-12 hours per day and report what I seen to the masses here.
I do hope you are not cheating and I was more creating a place that people could think and compare what you are accomplishing verses what Lou or Cassie or Croghan etc have done thru the years.
Thanks for the reply and the offer.

I consider my self to be pretty fair & reasonable. I have never put you in the same sentence as Pena - he stands alone. I don't see why you seem to be expecting to see any negativity, although I guess it is bound to happen. You win both the numbers game & logic game. You have tons of horses in classes that they should be in & you use the best drivers. And you've consistently done that at many tracks for many years.
Yeah, I agree that 1-5 4 horse entries suck for the sport but that's how things work out sometime. Your pacer's won 10(?) in a row so he's 1-5 or 2-5 on his own.
You can't please everyone; you gotta please yourself!

Has anyone ever left the Burke stable and went out and started a stable on their own?
I always wondered why you do not see more assistant trainers go out and test the waters, if I am correct Tony Alagna left Erv and went on his own. I would certainly be tempted to take a shot if it were me in that situtation!

I get a kick out of people making accusations whenever someone is successful in the field they are in. Like any business there are always people better then others. They have more talent, are better businessmen, have the financial backers that can take a loss and still continue in business, without blinking.
Harness racing is not much different. Buy good horses, give them the care that they need, keep them sound, race them in the right class and you should be successful. Each night you can go through a program and see at least 50% of the horses entered on the card are racing over their heads. With the NW of so much money last 5 or 6 condition classes written the way they are at most tracks, they entice owners and trainers to do so because once they drop to the class they belong they will likely be rewarded with a good pay cheque. Until these horses get to that class they belong , they rarely are raced tough and rarely will win, hence the low training percentage of many trainers. Look at the programs at Yonkers and you will see tons of glorified $40-50 claimers that race in conditions only that made over $100,000 last year grinding out money. Many of their trainers are low % guys who have small stables and protect their horses because they are hard to replace.
Large stables like the Burke operation can afford to lose a horse via a claim and need not worry about replacing them as they have many other good horses ready to drop in the same class. The message is they race their horses where they can win, they buy or claim off of a lot of low % trainers and thats the main reason why they are successful.
-

I am not a big fan of the Burkes and Pletchers in the racing world.I think too much horsepower in one hand is not good for racing IMO.
I do give them the credit they deserve for their success in the business under the most trying of times.
-
A man, who has been in this business a very long time, told me that the best pre-race for a horse is to classify one and the Burke Brigade does a very good job of that.
-

As Match Play pointed out very aptly, Burkes can lose one and it doesn't matter. They have back ups for every class. It's just a dream operation as far as I'm concerned.
Of course if I was running it, it would be a nightmare operation. rflmao1 I can handle 6-8 horses and no more. I'd rather get them going and sell them to a guy like Ronnie.
-
This shit gets so boring, show me proof of anything or STFU ! Same thing with Pena, yes it seems he
must be doing something to turn crippled 15k claimers into inv. horses but hell if they are doing their
job of testing and not finding anything then leave the man alone ! I will be honest and say I don't like
either one of them as a gambler cause you hardly ever get a price on them but I really respect the way
they manage their barns.

You hit the nail right on the head.
The emphasis should be enhanced testing and more funding for the same instead of raising your eyebrows every time a horse ends up in the winners circle. I don't know how it is done in the US but in Canada they reserve .8% of the handle for testing facilities.
In a game where money changes hand, there will always be crooks and cheats trying to make a buck the illegal way. We just have to try and be one step ahead of them as far as testing goes.
Take a look at this report where even the stewards were involved and they were paid to avoid testing 'certain' horses.

The problem with the Burke's is the PERCEPTION of wrong doing because of the Money won and High number of winners.....but this is FLAWED, due to the fact that he has SO MANY horses.....Below is his WIN Percentage, followed by some OTHER Trainers in 2012.
Ron Burke 220-55 = 25%
Dylan Davis 82-23 = 28%
Peter Pellegrino 61-19 = 31%
Tim Brown 36-16 = 44%
Joe Periera 59-16 = 27%
John Mungillo 44-16 = 36%
Kimberly Asher 43-14 = 32%
You'll notice ALL these trainers have BETTER Win percentages...Funny thing is...we don't hear about any of THEM being called SUPER Trainers...........
-
Tim Brown 36-16 = 44%
Not surprised here.

You make some good points in your post Gallo.
The perception that Burke is totally clean is also flawed to some extent. He has had his share of infractions along the way, minor, for some people, though it may be. An infraction is an infraction and is a blot on a trainers resume.
When Rene Allard, a high % trainer from Ontario, Canada invaded the Meadowlands and started winning races there was there were a lot of buzzes and a lot of eyebrows were raised every time his horse won. When one of his horses came up positive for high testosterone levels, the uproar could be heard from New Jersey to Canada. Nothing much came off that positive as he never served a suspension.
Here are some of Burke's infractions, a few of many I am sure that I could find on the www.

I can speak to Tim Brown as he trains out here at Cal Expo. Tim trains exclusively for KC Carvalho, who has plenty of money and plenty of horses. All are classified where they belong, and if they don't do well in a higher class, they are quickly dropped to where they should win. I am sure it is the same thing with the Burke's on a much larger scale. Hell, look at my trrainer, 13-4-3-5, only one starter since Jan 1 that did not hit the board. No shenanigans going on, I know how well they take care of the few horses they have, and how the horses have been thriving. Sometimes a little money for care goes a looonnngggg way!

Hell, look at my trrainer, 13-4-3-5, only one starter since Jan 1 that did not hit the board. No shenanigans going on, I know how well they take care of the few horses they have, and how the horses have been thriving. Sometimes a little money for care goes a looonnngggg way!
Who is your trainer? I'm not a Calx guy so I don't know your stats.
Bruce Ranger was my trainer here at PPK & he has always had a great win %. Also has the reputation of being squeaky clean since he got sober many years ago. Great person too; the best!

Been in beautiful northern California for 18 months! Steve is a great driver and would do well anywhere he goes. He is a native Californian, so he won't be going anywhere though.
