The following may get me in trouble here, but I am a bit closer to this than many of you since I make my living from exotic animals.
Jack is a good guy when he is sober. Kasich shutting down the auctions is a violation of the law as it exists and it does not surprise me.
Hannah talks about back door trading. The C-bus zoo is one of the most notorious back door traders in the zoo biz.
I welcome inspections of my animals as long as we also begin inspecting dog breeders and other domestic animal keepers (many of which are far more dangerous). I pay thousands a year for insurance and in 30 years have never had a claim. I get licensed in up to a dozen states each year, including Ohio (which requires me to have a permit for a garter snake, but not a cobra). Whatever happens, the law MUST not be written by politicians, but with input from the stakeholders.
(wow, sounds like slots at tracks, huh?)
Any law MUST allow exemptions for legitimate educational pursuits (the Strickland Executive order did not, btw)

Snail, I am far from perfect and I consider Jack a friend.
I am or have been licensed in dozens of states and some of these licensing laws are ridiculously convoluted, albeit well-intentioned.
For instance, I cannot display an alligator in Texas since I am not AZA accredited (not a public facility), nor permanently attached to a college or university (even if they are paying me to be there). Purpose- they do not want gators in roadside zoos. Good call. So, let's say I am starting a tour in Lousiaiana, where I am licensed and going to Kansas, where I do no require a license, but have three days in Texas in between. Texas will issue me a transport permit - I can transport my 'gators into the state, but cannot exhibit them or show them to anyone. "Hey what's in that trunk?" "An alligator." "Can we see him?" "No, it's against the law."
