I got a new laptop for Christmas, it came loaded with Windows7.(which is very nice) While on Facebook I had a pop-up requesting me to confirm my purchase of "Win 7" security, so I clicked on it. It's a fu*king virus that infected both my computers! I've talked to 4 repair people about it and the 1st question is, "Have you been on Facebook? We are over-run with with "Win 7" infections, and they have all come through Facebook." It costs $100-$140 to disinfect 2 computers and no guarantee that they won't reinfect, because they haven't written a new filter that it can't get around yet. It compromised my VISA acct, which had to be cancelled, but since I notified them immediately I don't have to cover the charges.
Be VERY careful about this until they get it figured out.

My puter got infected just before Christmas. Damn security warning. I've been able to purge it myself in the past, but no luck this time. Can only operate in the avast safe zone now and of course half the stuff never works. Have had trouble sending mail with attachments. Will have to take it in Or I might just reformat the damn thing. Then I have to load all the crap back on it. I'd like to have at those damn Ruskis with an AK-47.

Can't do a system restore. The virus blocks access to all utilities. I have the disk to reformat it, but that takes you back to day1.

disable proxy server in safe mode with networking. If this does not work, try using task manager ( in safe mode with networking) or registration keys.

I think you f11 as soon as you power up the computer to bypass the regular system start and you can do safemode with command prompt
and type in rstrui.exe to get to system restore.

My was infected yesterday with something and I could not even run it in safe mode.It would not let me access the internet at all.
It was something called a Vista2012Security Alert.
The Geek squad at Best Buy wanted me to buy a service agreement for $100 on sale to cover up to 3 computers.Luckily I the McAfee that I run was able to take care of it.

I caught a nasty a few months back and reformatting the HD with a local guy (after I spent around 30-hours attempting to remove) was the solution. (My local guy is rather cheap, and in addition provided the option of eliminating all the machines manufacturers crap).
None of the AV or Malware tools were effective in my 30-hours, regardless of mode.

My girlfriend's laptop was running like a five hundred dollar claimer so she gave it to a tech down the street who works out of his house. He stripped everything from it, including Windows, and installed Firefox. It runs great now.
A lot of service providers offer free anti-virus software with high-speed internet. They save money on customer service calls. With Comcast it's Norton Security Suite, which seems to do the job.

I'll tell you guys one thing: I have a Windows laptop that Ryan uses almost exclusively. I installed Google Chrome on it and it is soooo much faster it's not funny. Not sure if it is more secure or not, but I read it was indeed.
I hate Google because they dicked me once with Google ads, but the browser is the nuts, much faster than Firefox!

Used to love Firefox until they slowed it down so much! Now I am almost exclusively an Apple man, I use Safari on this machine....and like it by far the best!

I know Microsoft is out of favor with many, but I have a Windows phone that's designed to synch with Windows 7, which I run on my laptop. It's a seamless marriage that allows me to do most of what I can do on the PC on the phone, too. You can edit or create a Word document, for instance. Not a great choice for a gamer, but for typical day to day use--music, pictures, radio, email, texting, social media etc.--it's excellent. The early Windows phones left a lot to be desired, but the new ones are pretty good.

For the second quarter of this year it had sales of over 10% of the US market and it's market share is growing. There are people in the comment section who claim that mac's share in the world is better than what the article leads on.

I have the a windows phone 7 as well. I tried android for 29 days but it wasn't for me.
It's funny when I read articles how the app market just reached 50,000 and people that use ios or android make fun of that small number but everyone that has a windows phone would say there isn't a need for a lot of apps because they are built into the phone.
My only complaint is that text message stop at 160 instead of spilling over and sending it as two texts.

Back on topic though, JS when I was setting up a windows 7 computer for Amy's daughter it took several hours for all the automatic updates to load and install. A lot of them were security updates. You don't need to be at the computer the whole time, but let it download the updates and then shut the computer down so that it will install the updates. I think overall it needed to be turned off or restarted around 8 times before it was finally up to date.

ps- I'm usung the computer in the office at the VFW so I know I can't pass the virus on.(34 miles roundtrip, but only a couple of miles from my stable) What a PITA! I have 2 computers and can't use either one. Death penalty to all hackers!

Hi everybody.Long time reader here.I can fix your problems in less than 10 min.ok,follow these steps.restart your computer in safe mode with networking.Go to yahoo or whatever browser you use.Type in hitman pro 3.5 free download.Download and run this.You get 30 days free.You may have to restart your computer and retry this a few times,as the virus will sometimes try to block it.Do not download hitman pro 3.0 as it will show you the virus's but not remove them.When you run this,it takes only 5 min,delete all checked items.You are good to go now.i would also run a quick malwarebytes scan and delete any thing that comes up.Do a full malwarebytes scan maybe overnight,as it takes a few hours.These are great free tools.A place was going to charge my buddy $100/hour to remove this virus,with a minimum of 2 to 3 hours to fix it.Took me 10 min and he was good to go.Got a free trip to Northfield (bets included) out of it.

I would suggest all readers download and run Hitman Pro 3.5.Its free for a 30 day trial.I think people will be surprised what the scan reveals.On a side note , I have found out its easier to download this on internet explorer then on firefox.Good luck.

Any antivirus program can say it found whatever it wants to. That doesn't mean that it is legit.

I agree,but hitman pro 3.5 IS NOT an anti virus program.It is a cloud based second opinion scan.100% legit.Its not like that "finally fast" shit and others that show you many more problems then you really have,and then want you to buy their programs to clean your computer.Sure,they would like you to buy their software,and it is well worth the price.But you dont have to.30 days free trial.Like i said,I have been a reader of this forum a long time.Just wanted to help anybody that got one of those bogus virus programs.Malwarebytes,Super anti spyware,Spybot,etc.,are great programs that are free and everybody should have,but they will not get rid of that particular virus (really not a virus,but destructive spyware).As far as anti virus programs,i think they all suck.last year i was using a newer program called Vipre.Ended up with more virus's than I had my whole life.Thats how i found hitman pro 3.5.I am now running free Avast,which i think is as good as anything i have ever paid for.Just trying to help.

Totally correct, Sterno. So many people download or even "buy" their own viruses with Windows-based systems.
I still have several Windows systems, but when they die, they will all be replaced with Macs. I'm even going to buy a Mac this year to put at my other office in Arizona...and I am usually only there one or two days per month. I just can't take using a Windows computer any longer unless it is absolutely necessary.
I must admit though if not for the business write offs, it might be harder to justify the purchase price of Macs.

The neighbors across the street told me they were done with their computer because it crashed. The hard drive had issues once before and I reformatted it, so I figured that it was the cause and put in a different hard drive.
I had it going and was having all the updates load and suddenly it looked like the hard drive crashed. It appears to be the same issue that JS and The Giss's daughter had on their computers. It also runs on Vista so there must be something wrong with either one of the update files or something in the hardware is causing the computer to screw up.
I'm just going to find someone with an xp disk and put that on instead as I have some COA stickers I can use.

My grandaughter's boyfriend was over last nite and he got my wireless up and running everything in less than a 1/2 hr. thumbsup I was 4 hrs the nite before and couldn't get shit to work. idunno Love these kids. Grams can't function without'em. It only cost me thier supper of pork chops and chicken breasts. mashed tators & gravey, green beans and ice cream. No Problem!!!!!!!! ;)

About a year ago I had problems with a virus when I opened up a spam email with an attachment.
My computer guy had to reformat the whole thing with my original Microsoft XP disk that I had. As a backup he put in another window with his own Chinese pirated copy of an XP disk. Two months down the road my original XP window again went bonkers and since then I have been using my pirated back up window with hardly any problems. Go figure.

Got my new laptop back online thanks to my friends here on ITS. Thanks so much, guys. I was at wit's end 'cause I couldn't even get it lit-up to try to fix it... then Sterno sent me a pm suggesting that I hit the f8 key repeatedly as soon as I started it up. BINGO! I ran the free version of hitman3.5 followed by malwarebytes, and finally got that crap off of the puter. Advice from Hugh Jass, Jeremy, and Sterno are very much appreciated.
