Tonight at Northfield, 9 of the 15 races were won by the horse cutting the mile. Two other races were won by horses who pulled at the quarter or did the give and go move.
Someone needs to start parking these guys like they did in the old days.

That's half-mile racing in general, which is why so many won't play it.
-
I agree, but not that many generally win cutting the mile.

I'm not surprised that 5 of the horses on the lead at the half that did not win were driven by Aaron Merriman. I'm sure if he was there for the first 4 races that number would have been higher.
Yes he is a talented driver and wins a lot of races at Northfield on horses no other driver would but it seems he does get caught in the stretch more than any other driver. Especially when he is up by more than 2.5 lengths at the half.

Last night, only 5 of 15 winners cut the whole mile. I think that should be further reduced to about 3-4. People just have to sacrifice sometimes and push the guys who want to cut all the miles. I certainly realize today's drivers are not like yesterday's drivers, when you only cut two or three miles every year with most horses, but you simply cannot allow guys to cut every mile.

If I remember right, Lew Williams and Walter case cut out most of the miles they won on half mile tracks. Maywood, Yonkers, and Northfield.

Keep in mind that harness racing is conducted to distribute slot money to horsemen. Nobody gives a damn about the bettors/fans. They don't want to burn their animals up . There is always next week.

You actually burn your horses up gunning them to the front every start. I guarantee you these horses will not get 40+ starts a years.

It's not how many starts you get its how much money you earn. Don't have to gun them to the front every start. Only when it's your turn.
