had this discussion on another forum and thought i would ask the forum's midwesterners here who i respect their opinion
my recollection of him as an aged pacer was not of greatness but a very good ffa horse who won when the top tier were not going

I think you could say he was a top free for aller. Finished top 3 in a bunch of big stakes for a couple of years. Think he even won one of the big ones.

his biggest win out east came in the Pacing Classic. He biggest win of his career was beating Red Bow Tie in the American National at Balmoral. He competed and hung tough against the Top FFA'ers. Was he ever considered the best? No

I can't remember if it was him or Color Me Best that dragged Jay Randall to a 49 mile at M1. No body better than Joe in his day.
