Where'd Walter Dear Go?
The 1929 Hambletonian winner disappeared during WW II, as did many other Standardbreds of noteworthy bloodlines that were active in Europe pre-WW II.
Note only were the horses lost, but also were the documents supporting the bloodlines (and/or existence) of many, many other horses (breed registry).
Course the same thing happened to millions, and millions of people.

This article from the Feb 22, 1950 Harness Horse magazine a bit long.
I hadn't realized the Reich-mark was the active currency in Germany after the war ended.
This article provides references to the then-German tracks and the conversion of currencies that transitioned harness racing in Germany.

 Perhaps that same history of Post-WW II German-racing attributed to today's state of harness racing in Germany.
