Every horse is different. One of the signs its time to stop is looking how well he's holding his weight. Sometimes the coat also tells ya its time to quiit.
Any Lameness at all says stop.
Also,IMHO,with fillies its attitude.Watch their ears in certain situations.

we had a bad experince last yr,,with a filly,,

THANK U,,FOR YOUR ADVICE

I always let the horse tell me. Fillies are easily heartbroken so I watch them closely. One bad start makes me suspicious; two bad starts I quit for the year. Everyone has their own opinion... that's mine.

they say 8-12 is optimal but all you really want to do is ensure they learn how to race when your feel thats reached you can quit if they arent quite fast enough.

I think Captaintreacherous had around 14 last year and all were very high speed and he was still strong when they shut him down. They're hoping for a monster 3yo. I hope they're right. Super nice colt.

PROBABLY NO MORE THAN 10

24. Signed Don McKirgan.
Seriously, a horse trotting in '15 at county fairs can probably start more than a Captaintreacherous should.

Race two heats as often as possible at fairs. If you are lucky enough to get two heats to race, cut their warmups down to just jogging one trip and going a mile around 2:25 the second warmup trip.
If the purse for each heat is above $2000, I would not go more than two fairs each week.
