When I was in the Professional Musician's Union they'd ask for paid volunteers to do public service gigs to promote live music. The pay was about minimum wage so few would do it, but we had band members that were living on nearly nothing. We were touring from childrens disabled centers to hospitals to nursing homes, etc. and ended up up at the Champaign Co, Nursing Home. We'd tour the rooms of folks who were bedfast, (nurses would guide us) and then do a finale in the Day room/cafeteria. We were a walking troop of a guitar, Doghouse bass, Fiddle, and hand percussionist.
A charming little 98 year old lady with a thick German accent, in a wheel chair told us of how she escaped Nazi Germany and made it to America, but lost her family in Germany. She said "Silent Night" always brought back fond memories. We played a short intro, and before we could sing she started it and sang it beginning to end in German... her voice was a bit crackly, but perfectly on key. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
The band had a team huddle and agreed to donate our day's wages to the home's activity fund in her honor. We left feeling we were the ones who got the real Chistmas present. Sorry to say she didn't see another Christmas, but I'm glad we made that one nicer.

It's ironic that you tell that story because last night I listened to several singers singing Silent Night in German.
It is a beautiful song in any language! thumbsup

Silent Night - at Christmas Eve service last night the choir started the candle light portion by singing Silent Night. As the candle light was passed from person to person the lights were turned off, leaving only the light from the candles illuminating the church. Eventually everybody was holding a candle and the entire congregation had joined in singing. I was holding my daughter as she looked in amazement at the candle light and the beautiful singing. She leaned over and whispered in my ear "I love you Poppi".
A moment I won't forget anytime soon.

I kind of tired of Christmas songs years back, but "A Mannheim Steamroller Christmas" will bring it back everytime. Chip Davis is the backbone of 'Mannheim'. He also spoofed a novelty country song named "Convoy" under the name 'C,W. McCall' that went to #1.

I kind of tired of Christmas songs years back, but "A Mannheim Steamroller Christmas" will bring it back everytime. Chip Davis is the backbone of 'Mannheim'. He also spoofed a novelty country song named "Convoy" under the name 'C,W. McCall' that went to #1.
Chip wrote the song, but C.W.McCall was the performing name of an Omaha musician/spokesperson. Chip was working at an ad agency at the time and C.W. voiced a lot of his commercials.
When EVERY recording label turned down Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire Album, he wanted to start his own label (American Gramophone, of which he is still the CE/Prez). Convoy financed that label. Without it, there would be no Mannheim Steamroller albums.
