That must have been spooky!

There used to be an overcheck alternative call "The Raymond Overdraw" which eventually evolved into the O'Mara. The original had a couple long metal bars that extended ahead of the horses' face.

One time at the para-mutual track in Henderson,Ky, Merle Finn was behind the gate and when the starter said "Go" and the gate closed, the Raymond was caught in the gate and snatched the bridle off of the horse.

There sat Merle with a horse at full speed in a field of horses, and not one thing on the horse's head to control him.

Talk about needing some clean BVD's.

Probably needed a dental job after the race.

Do they have horse dentists? I wonder.

Sarah Jessica Parker has nice teeth so I imagine so.

Why is Gary's favorite figure skater not named Michelle Kwan the starter at Monticello ?

Oh yes they have horse dentists. Rick "Tooth Fairy" Hann is the main guy around Northfield.

There were a pair of Rubin brothers too, Larry Moriarty, a Hagniere kid...there's a lot of them. Equine dentists were probably behind my extreme dental phobia.

Here is the video of the race. Scary situation for the horse and driver with the starting van going at 40 mph.

Just watched the replay.  wow.  good thing he had middle post position up next to the car, if he had been out on the wing i don't think he'd stayed on his feet.  wonder how he'll go to the gate next week.  wonder if Mike will drive him  ;)

Yeah, but he rode the starting gate to the 1/4 pole!

Could have been a disaster. Great job by the starter.

That was probably the fastest start by a horse I have seen in a harness race barring none.

Dave Magee gave me some very good advice once:

If you head to the gate with a rat puller, give him his head and get some rest before the start, because you'll need some blood back into your arms during the race.

Never had one get hung up in the gate, but I did have one duck under the wing once. That was wooly.
