More Questions Than Answers
My first thought last week upon hearing the news of Lou
Pena's suspension in New York was "this is just the beginning."
But the beginning of what? It seems to me that his
case, no matter how it is resolved, raises many more questions
than it answers about where racing integrity is today
and where it may be headed. And I hope the industry's
leaders, and its regulators and veterinarians, have the courage
over the next few months to find and then make public
the answers to some of these questions.
I long ago stopped listening to what Pena and his sycophants
have to say. But he's almost beside the point. The
point is that his suspension, and the dramatic investigation
which preceded it, have generated a strong and sustained
backlash from trainers and veterinarians at the very core of
the sport in North America. They tell me, to a man, that the
New York State Wagering and Racing Board has just accomplished
a miracle-- it has made Pena seem like a victim
to many industry insiders.
