For doing away with the cigar.
But please don't invite me to your next cook out.

-
My reference to the cigar is from the title caricature of "The Giss" on home page of The USTA.
The "Smoking with the Giss " colume had him smoking a big ugly cigar.
It has now been replaced by a flaming hot and smoking outdoor grill.
I can only assume the change was made because of political correctness.
But anyway, I think much more correct.
-
Am I the only one that noticed?
I am trying to give the Giss a complment.

I just now noticed.......glad you aren't going to the cook out........more for me! 8)

I doubt political correctness came into play..........next week he'll be running a still!

It did... I wish... I won't.

Giss
How is smoking a cigar politically incorrect? Nothing like a Starbucks and a fine cigar anytime of year but especially wonderful on a crisp fall day.

Complaints were made about the logo and the title. noway
Personally, I prefer a small batch bourbon to Starbucks, but otherwise cannot disagree. I had to fight just to keep the title and suggest the smoking grill in order to keep the title. Fact is that it is more acceptable to pass gas in a crowded elevator than to smoke an El Rey Del Mundo Corona Immenso Oscura in public.
-
I think smoking the cigar while barbequeing will work just fine then everyone will be happy. Oh wait, nothing really makes the tree hugger vegan types happy unless they are allowed to impose their will.

Not only is it more acceptable, I've been in towns in California where it is illegal to smoke anywhere on the sidewalks or streets! If I could sip bourbon and drive, I wouldn't have to smoke. 4pezz2 4pezz2 4pezz2
A pox on all those who complained. thumbsdown thumbsdown thumbsdown

Curious, Miss Media, were you one of the ones who complained?
Considering the vastly declining USTA membership, as well as very small market share (degrading daily), all it really takes is one disgruntled person speaking to another disgruntled representative.
"It's who you know and who you blow"!

Curious, Miss Media, were you one of the ones who complained? 4pezz2
No,but a friend that did send an Email to The USTA complaining did send me a copy of what he sent.
I agree with my friends complaints, and again thank you. Even if you had to be dragged kicking and screaming by the seat of your pants into a smoke free world.

Stay thirsty my friends.

:o
I'm at a loss for words.
But I'll find some.
So a cartoon depiction was smoking........smoking AND GAMBLING..........and someone felt the need to write and complain? And the USTA took it to heart? :-\
I'm checking out of this world if Roadrunner stops making Wiley E fall off cliffs and Lucy quits pulling the football away from Charlie Brown.

I'm going to point this out one more time........................AND GAMBLING!!!!!!!!!

It is what it is, but my faith in life is renewed. After pretty much giving up on the Ashton Kutcher version of 2 1/2 Men, I tune in tonight to see Charlie Harper's "ghost" played by.... Kathy Bates. bowdown

A person who watched members of the older generation of his family die a slow, painfull, and aganizing death due to smoking.
My generation grew up watching "The Marlboro Man" on TV every night on hundreds of adds.
Most very teenage boy wanted to be "The Maraboro Man" and get the girl.
Most every teenage girl wanted to be swept off her feet by "The Marlboro Man", and ride off into the sunset with him and his horse.
Now our hero has died an ugly death due to smoking, and we (my generation) are dying off hundreds a day due to smoking.
Granted "The Giss" and his cigar are not "The Marlboro Man" or even "Joe Camel", but lets not again glorify a deadly habit. Have we not learned any thing from the past?
The man who complained and sent me the Email has no grandchildren, but he is trying to protect yours.

Who asked him to? Are kids reading giss' blog ? Adults don't need or want other adults telling them how to run their lives.
People need to stop self appointing themselves.
Does this friend drink alcohol?

Maybe change it to"Bourbon With the Giss."
2nd hand Bourbon, oh, never mind. The thought police are out there. They control the agenda. And we wonder why the industry cannot gain/keep fans.
When Ohio worked so hard to pass slots at tracks the "first" time, track managers were blissfully unaware of the result of the "no indoor smoking law," which was also on the ballot. I remain convinced that this was the killing blow to Ohio racing.

Whatever the name, don't be afraid to play the Cal Expo pick-4. It pays great every week, even with 25 claimers. ;D There is usually 1 or 2 singles each week which makes it easy to play for an affordable price!

Yeah cause that is really what is wrong in the world today..... ::)
No what is wrong in the world today is people like you and your friend trying to tell everyone how to live their lives. But the f**k out!!!!

My own father died September 23, 2005 (Jug Day) of esophageal cancer, this after he had melanoma in 1968, his left lung removed in 1989. His father (my grandfather) had lung cancer in his left lung. The lung was removed, and six months later, he died of a heart aneurysm. My father and his father both smoked.
My father's brother never smoked in his life. He too now has stage four lung cancer that has spread to his bones, pancreas, and liver. He too is likely screwed, and probably sooner than later.
I do not smoke, but by my own choice I work in a casino that allows smoking. I may or may not get cancer, but I already have asthmatic bronchitis and have had it for 55 years. I have a brother who smokes who already has COPD, and another brother who doesn't smoke, but has had pneumonia twice in his left lung. I would guess that all of the men on my father's side of the family have inherited bad lung genes.
That being said, it is not my business if anyone smokes or doesn't. I am not a busy body who gives one tiny little damn if someone smokes, drinks, eats aspartame, gambles, is gay, or chooses a different religion than mine. I don't even care if Careless Hal plays blackjack badly-it's his money! I simply mind my own affairs, and everyone would be better off minding their own affairs...and raising their own kids and grandkids.

Yeah, but I have an excuse--too many chicks bothering me in Vegas. Can't concentrate on the game. Remember when those 3 hot chicks returning to their room(or trying to) came over and had to High 5 me--I forgot to double down!! 4pezz2 4pezz2 4pezz2
No one will say smoking is good for you. It would be nice if it didn't exist. But as long as it is legal, it comes down to individual choice. Reports are that fewer and fewer are taking up the filthy habit. That is good. The government likes to tell us what to do in almost every facet of our lives. Now they are taking little kids lunches away from them and forcing them to eat chicken nuggets. When they try to outlaw pizza, I'm taking to the streets with my M16.

Or GAMBLING, as in pari-mutual wagering. On HARNESS RACING.
I have a friend whose life was destroyed due to a gambling addiction. I'm going to email the USTA and ask them to eliminate all forms of wagering on all races so that no one's grandchildren suffer the same fate as my friend.
Bunch of HYPOCRITES! thumbsdown
-
That was kind of my point too Tony........IT'S GAMBLING! idunno
-
There is a gentleman that operates several McDonalds franchises in my area, and is a very sharp buisnessman. Being a campus town, we are beset with many activists. Well, a bunch of PETA/Vegan types came into one of his busy resaurants and started bitching about him selling meat and deep-fried food, blah, blah, blah. They were calling for a boycott of his stores.
His reply: "Go ahead, you don't buy sh*t here anyway! Now quit bothering my customers or I'll have you thrown in jail." They moved on to somewhere else where someone would knuckle under to them. That's the only way to handle these idiots.
I average about 1 cigar every 1-2 years.(or more often if I run into Chicago Jazz) Anyone that doesn't like it can kiss my kiester. Funny how the activists and politicians won't ban tobacco, because they want the gazillions of tax dollars from it to waste on other stuff. Total hypocrites.
-
I have been following this folly......an interesting folly to say the least. First up, Smoking is not illegal. Giss's picture was of a man and his trademark cigar - so be it. My dad smoked, he died a smoker. I do not smoke nor do I care to - its all about choice. Did Giss' picture include a statement or a ad saying PLEASE BE LIKE ME AND SMOKE A CIGAR? No, I don't think so. Much as its not for me I respect peoples right to smoke and expect them to respect my decision to not smoke.
This whole nonsense is overkill, much ado about nothing as I see it. The stogie was/is Giss's trademark, for better or for worse. I don't see anyway it was encouraging people to smoke.
If USTA required the change, I'm not happy about it and view it as a over-reaction knee jerk decision to please a few while not pleasing the rest. Geez. Aren't there better more important things to deal with?

Not when your the new boss attempting to please the folks that hired you, or, the one of the employee's under the new boss trying to justify yourself.
-
I say we find out what Miss Media and their friend does for a living, and then call their bosses and tell them what they are doing during the day instead of working!!!!
Seriously, WTF is wrong with people????? You seriously have nothing better to do with yourself??? GET A LIFE!!!
And Beans, you are right, the USTA becomes a bigger joke by the day

I've not been a big critic of the USTA as I think a lot of things they do, they do quite well. They are antiquated though in some of their thinking. They avoid political involvement like its a plague, they claim its not in their Charter or not their role. I respectfully and strongly disagree. "If Racing is your profession, Politics must be your busines." USTA leaves it up to others. They are a National Trade Association that does not invovle itself nationally in the political arena. This, I find to be quite wrong. The ASAE, American Society of Association Executives, will validate my statement and the need for a strong political presence. They need to change their ways and create a national PAC (Political Action Committee) to lobby official positions and to help quality candidates that are industry friendly get elected. Its baloney to say this can't be done - it CAN be done, as it should be. There are States like Ohio, Michigan, Illinois that could use the assistance, the help and they're not getting it.
This Smokin With The Giss thing is both laughable and pathetic at the same time......
-
Right you are Dale. It should have a PAC fighting for harmess racxing. I bet the casinos have plenty of PACs.

Hal, the Casino's are LOADED up with lobbyists. Yes they have pacs and political involvement up the provebial ying-ying. In Michigan for example, their influence is HUGE!

Perhaps reduce the general purse fund ;-))
Or increase USTA Fees?

Lobbyist's get paid from dues or fees dollars or other sources of "non-dues revenue" which Associations are all too aware of (or should be). Money for candidates that comes from the PAC's comes from solicited funds and must be voluntary but I can tell you first hand, over time, the war chest gets quite large....does not matter what sort of association - it all works pretty much the same.
-
Organizations that I belonged to hada $5 PAC fee added to dues. You could opt out of the PAC if you wanted to do that. But, it took action on your part. Most never did.

The Mi-HHA had a lobbyist for quite a while that was paid big bucks.

The IHHA had a lobbyist who they paid a lot of money. He left to take the same position for the Johnstons.(Blmpk-May) He left with all our 'inside info' which he could share with his new employers.

GAMBLING has been mentioned in the thread....YES, it is inherently better to gamble away all you have and destroy your family than to smoke....no question.
