1st Cassin Hanover (Freg Egan ), 2d Storm Cloud (Ned Bower) 1957KyFut,
Hoot Song was sent away the favorite in the first but she was shuffled back and then broke stride near the wire as she challenged. It appeared as though Dave Smith and Speedster were going to win that heat until Ned Bower climbed out of the skies with Storm Cloud and whipped them all at the wire in 2.024/5. In this one, Cassin Hanover lost her footing on a wet spot at the top of the stretch and broke stride, the first time she has done that this year for Egan. She finished 11th.
Double Scotch gained the early lead in the second heat and lasted in the stretch, under the urging of Del Miller, to hold off Philip Frost and the late-charging Cassin Hanover. Storm Cloud broke at the start, and Hoot Song and Time Me made breaks at the five-eighths pole.
In the third heat Speedster took Time Me down to the half in 583/5 with Egan, in third place, taking a deep seat with Cassin and refusing to engage in the struggle as the top pair pulled open lengths away. Hoot Song and Storm Cloud were 9th and 10th at this point. The pace slackened going to the three-quarter and as the leaders faltered Hoot Song rushed up to nail Speedster with Cassin Hanover coming on the outside and Bower looking for racing room with Storm Cloud. Egan's late surge proved just enough with Bower being unable to squeeze through in 2.021/5 and when the three heat winners went down to the half in 1.072/5 with Double Scotch leading Cassin Hanover and Storm Cloud in that order, it was, in Egan's later words, "all over but the shouting."
The old man was confident he could outbrush the colts if it was left to that and fie did so handily, last quarter of a 2:093/5 mile in 292/5 seconds. Mrs. Sheppard became the first woman owner ever to step into the winner's circle on Futurity Day and the win was the second for Egan.
The same day that Cassin and Egan had it so good, Torpid and Johnny Simpson had it bad.

Sedalia, MO track rework in late 1959.
Sedalia was a GC stop until 1961 or 62 when they stopped and the dates were picked up by DRC/Wolverine.

Most of the early photo's in the old mags on Sportsman's were so small and such bad quality that it literally makes no sense to scan them.
The 1960s Harness Horse issues (at least the weeklies) contained such bad quality photo's for the complete decade, that most every photo contained in those issues is useless as well.

Back in the early 90's I ran across that infield just east of where the boy is fishing. I was at the security barn on the backstretch to grab a piece of equip I had forgot, and couldn't wait for the bus cause they were about to call my race in the paddock. I was wearing my colors so they knew exactly who I was. When the race was over I was told to come back to the paddock instead of heading to the backside. I was holding the hot horse at the paddock judge's office door when I was handed the phone. MISTER Langley informed me that if he ever saw my little twinkle-toes on that infield grass again it would be the end of me racing there again. BANG went the phone, and I quietly handed my handset back to the Judge.

Oh, and Phil increased my security time from 2hrs to 8hrs to make sure I didn't forget about crossing the infield. That lasted about a month. 4pezz2

That's a very kind offer.
I edit plenty of photo edges and constant backgrounds with Photoshop.
My master archival scans are as all saved as TIF's. This archive file must have been close to a full page advertisement, because the file size for the TIF is 44-meg+. (more than 3X times the size of other TIF's from that issue.)
What I present here and keep active as working files are drastically downsized JPG's..
I could likely clean this one up easily and hadn't really looked at until your kind offer.

There's two other similar scheme photo's that I like.
One is with P. W. Moser (and his camera) surrounded by kids at Lexington (http://www.mi-harness.net/SBreds/Memor105.html). Scroll down to Moser obit.
The other (which would take some real time to locate; not today) is a photo of a bunch of kids that were half-in-and-half-out under the fence at a track watching the races.
I have a special folder, "kids" that I've copied some photo's to. That famous pic of Niatross with that little girl is a treasure.
