I got called 3 times, did not serve once.  The worst one was the one that had me call ever night for a week to see if I would be needed. I don't mind getting called for it but when they do at least let me serve instead of not being needed.

It was not me. I got admonished by the judge, under penalty of contempt. Today she freed us to talk about it.

Here is the synopsis of my jury case. A young kid who appeared to be Ryan's age (24) was on trial for stealing copper wire from telephone pole. The poles contain about 150 feet of cooper wire each. In between each pole in Las Vegas, the power guy said there is 120 more feet of wire.

So this kid was allegedly seen at 4:30 am pulling these wires out by a guy older than me in pitch darkness at 4:30 am on July 7 or 8, 2011.

The problem was the guy was too far away to make an accurate identity. He was walking his dog at that time, so he turned around and went home to call 911.

Police show up at 4:55, no bad guys on the scene, but there was 150 feet of wire that had been pulled out laying there in the street.

The cops disperse, and at 5:15, only 1/3 of a mile away from the original scene, one cop saw a kid standing on his bike watching another kid hunched down to the ground with his hand in a light pole box on the ground. Cop pulls up, kid on the ground comes up with a hand containing wire cutting lineman's pliers. Kid says something to the other kid, puts the pliers in his rear pocket, hops on his BMX bicycle and rides away.

The cop arrested the kid who was just sitting there and called for help catching the other kid. His fellow cops chased the kid into a wash, but the police car could not go in there so they went around the wash. The dumbass kid came out the other side and kept riding away from them. Cops had sirens blazing, chasing the kid till he wrecked his bike and went asshole over tea kettle.

Now there were no wires cut on the second pole or in the case, but the case was open and he had his hand and the wire cutters inside the case.

Jury got the case, the kid we are trying has four serious charges against him.

1. Conspiracy to steal copper wire with his buddy.

2. They charged him first with the second box that they actually caught his hand inside.

3. He was charged with the wire theft 1/3 mile away, despite no reliable i.d. witness, no prints, no nothing except what I felt was conjecture.

4. He was charged with carrying burglar tools...pliers used for cutting wire and one piece of copper wire that was 6 inches long.

Immediately upon the start of discussions, I blurted out that no matter how long we stayed in the jury room, I would never vote to convict the kid of count 3. This pissed off several jurors. I further pissed them off because they were all sheep and voted to believe everything the police said on the witness stand.

I had written in my notes that the first cop who testified was lying several times. I can easily tell by their body language, and I was pissed immediately that he was screwing this kid over some copper wire.

The other cops were reliable witnesses, as was the guy walking the dog who originally saw "a young white guy, athletically built, with a long sleeved black shirt and dark pants, and a BMX bike." These kids both had BMX bikes, but neither had a black long sleeved shirt. One had a black short sleeved shirt, but that is not a long sleeved shirt. I would not convict on that one piece of evidence.

So many on the jury were pissed at me because I said that, but I had some support on my side, as several others also said they'd have a hard time convicting on that count. But I lost a lot of support when I said the first cop was a liar...and I did not believe much, if anything he had to say. I voted not guilty on all counts.

Everyone was getting really pissed because I sat there for three hours and didn't blink an eye. They were telling me it was common sense that the kid had done "something". I said "Mike Tyson also was a punk-assed thug criminal, but they found him guilty of a rape I don't think he committed, and sent him to prison. And in my opinion, Tyson should not have gone to prison for rape. I have reasonable doubt, period!"

After I ate another free sandwich, one guy offered to broker a deal in which we find the kid guilty of the other three charges...and not guilty of the one I felt so strongly about.

Now mind you I thought this kid was Ryan's age and I did not want to give him a long sentence in prison for stealing copper wire. I told them I would go along with any two charges except the third charge. I mean he did get caught with his hand in the box on the ground that contained the wires, with wire cutters in his hand.

One more sandwich, some more Ruffles chips, and I was full. I had 11 people pissed at me, and we'd been in the room for nearly 4 hours.  I said "Oh screw it. Give me the one not guilty and I'll plead guilty to the other charges."

After we reached the verdict agreement, the Las Vegas Court Marshall was called in. I told him to please ask the judge to can the idiotic speech about how we served our community, etc, and let us get the hell out of there...and to tell her she had my vote in every subsequent election if she never called me to serve jury duty again.

Now everyone loves me.

After we are released, the jurors met downstairs for our pay and paperwork. The prosecutors came down to talk to us and think us, and ask questions of them. I said "How in the hell did you charge him with count #3? DId you just toss a bunch of shit up against the wall and hope some of it stuck?"

They said they did not expect us to convict on that count and the only reason they ever tried this case was because these two guys had done 14 poles that night in the same area, causing $110,000 damage. ALso that the guy we tried was not going anywhere for a long, long time.

He has been in jail since August with a $250,000 bond for armed robbery, armed burglary, and armed kidnapping. They tried this case only to show his criminal background so they can lock him away and throw away the key in March.

Then the defense attorneys appeared as well. They told us then that they were both court-appointed lawyers and that they really had little to work with.

I told the lead attorney that he could be my attorney any time, but that I had some pointers for him. Gave him two pointers that told him I might have gotten him a not guilty on one more count had he done those two things, and he agreed and wished I had sent those questions from the jury box.

As for his beautiful female co-counsel, I told her that she did one thing that swayed me immediately onto her side. She looked deeply into my eyes when she was talking to me.

Her face brightened right up and she thanked me and said that was something she really had spent a lot of time working on. I then told her she had beautiful eyes too, by the way. That went over very good as well.

 ;D thumbsup

All in all I must say that even though her honor asked me to specifically not speak on the case till after it was over on Facebook or the internet, it was not that bad an experience. Of course had I not obeyed her instructions to look up any of the parties in the case, I would have voted guilty on all four charges...but would have gotten less free sandwiches.
