I understand what you are saying tonyb.......but has one who has "occasionally" stuck her foot in her mouth, I'm just glad the person I offended didn't want to be confrontational which it looks like these people did.

Sad.......but too many times, instead of people letting an insult roll off or apologizing the "get-in-your-face" attitude takes over.
takes two to tangle.
I could have been a contender

... IMO that was not the time or place for that comment, mostly because children were involved.

Regardless of religious beliefs: If some adult is a prick to my kids or grandkids, I'm going to get in their face too.

At least have balls enough to mouth-off to an adult. The kids were just having fun trick-or-treating... no reason to ruin their night.

Normally I wouldn't even bother posting to something like this, but this time I'm going to.

It's one thing to post a funny one-liner on a message board amongst friends (like you do so frequently here Jeremy) but why be a smart-ass in real life and do exactly as you state in the title of this thread? IMO you instigated the behavior trying to be funny. That's no way to go through life, being disrespectful to someone and especially children. Why potentially ruin someone's evening just for a good laugh? Eventually you may say the wrong thing to the wrong person and things could escalate into violence.

So it's okay to be a smart-ass but when challenged you wonder why they can't just walk away? Why not be accountable for your own actions rather than expecting others to do nothing but take the abuse? Why not just say "in hind sight maybe I shouldn't have said that." You could have turned the other cheek by just zipping your lips, shutting the door, walking inside and telling someone "I was going to tell the priest "you like kids...." ".

I'm about twice your age and have met many esteemed ITS posters. They will tell you I enjoy a good laugh as much as anyone but there is a time and place for everything. IMO that was not the time or place for that comment, mostly because children were involved. If I was your father I was have slapped you upside your head and apologized to the family, but that's just me and the way I was raised.

I disagree with several counts and will explain why.

To me a 16 year old is not a child, at that age many are getting jobs.  When I managed people that age, I did my best to treat and talk to them like adults.

Second, if that family is Catholic he shouldn't be dressing up as a priest as he is not a man of the cloth, and if he isn't Catholic they shouldn't be dressing up as Catholics.

Third, its Halloween, if people are going to be dressed up like that, they should expect comments.  If it was a 5 year old kid I wouldn't be saying stuff like that.  There is also no harm in saying you like children.  I didn't say 'hey you touch boys' or 'hey you like little boys'

But hey, on the subject of "if I was your child" that was a pretty messed up comment on your part, because it makes it seem like you believe my parents must have screwed something up, and I am grateful that I have the parents I do and they did a fine job in raising me.

EDIT  Also, I don't flaunt my religion, most people know that I am Catholic but I don't try pushing my beliefs on them.  I do believe and you are free to disagree with it, that people that portray themselves as religious or all about God should be the first to turn the other cheek.  Not go into attack mode.

With all that said, I will admit that if I was paying more attention to the people in the driveway and noticed the parents (I recognize them as more of the religious family than the kids), I wouldn't have made that comment, not because of their parents were there, but because I would have known their son wouldn't like the joke.

98 out of 100 people dress up as a priest as a joke.  There is a difference between being a prick and saying a joke that the vast majority of the people would have taken in stride or that was the joke they were going for this Halloween, being a priest on a holiday about kids.

I also feel that if a comment like that can ruin the night of someone in their mid to late teens, that there are some obvious issues that kid will need to deal with.

This part as nothing to do with my comment so I didn't post it with the replies, the same lady that was angry at me told a person wearing the mask from V for Vendetta but red that they were going to Hell for wearing the mask of the devil.

I think the offended family blew it way out of proportion........especially considering they obviously live in a glass house.

Halloween should be for fun and frivolity.

Everyone has a different idea of a sense of humor.........lots of pregnant nun costumes out there.

I don't like all the ghoulish items my next door neighbor adorns their yard with.........trust me, it's borderline satanic and she has two small children.........but I know Jesus still loves them.  8)

I agree with you 100% and as a matter of fact believe it or not I have made

my share of "bad" jokes but usually I immediately realize it was not so funny

and I feel terrible and apologize profusely.

I think I missed two key details when telling this story, one was after the first time my father told them to get off the property was he also added 'what more do you want, he already apologized to him'  and the other point was the younger kids were all fine and ready to get to the next house, and it was only the older son (about 16) and the parents that had a problem.

I may have made it sound like that all the kids were there and heard and paid attention but that was not the case.

After having a day to think about it, I don't think I would have made that comment had I noticed who the family was, but I still see no reason to change my personality and try to be more politically correct because I feel that I have brightened more days with my comments over the years and trying to have fun than ruined.  If 5% of the population gets mad about it that is fine.

Its over and done with, just move on. I would like you to know that just if

you just come out and say hey I made a mistake or my bad or whatever

no one will think badly of you. Not preaching to you just sharing from my

own experience.

"Looks like I ruined Halloween"

Okay, but why? I just don't get the point. It was just kids having fun and getting free candy. I loved trick-or-treating as a kid, and never had a religious or political agenda. I wanted to have fun.

And.. nearly all kids his age dressed like a priest would be doing so as a joke

Not really sure where you get there was a religious or political agenda to what I said.

If you don't like the wording of the thread that is fine.
