Hint this horse was a terror that couldn't be handled by two trainers, yet turned to a pussy-cat under this driver.
Nimble Hanover (Alma Sheppard)
Sports Illustrated article

Many people don't give Alma Sheppard enough due credit. Mistakenly believing that she just jumped on Dean Hanover as set a record ("anybody can do that").
Alma's hard work and improving skills over an extended period, were what made Henry Thomas (as well as the Sheppard Family) so proud and impressed for the young lady.

ya never heard of a cattle prod ;)

Gordy Norris used to have a trotter named Rat Fink.
I don't know how he was in the barn or the paddock, however they had to jog and warm him up on lead chain and behind another bike, otherwise he'd attack anything (man, horse or machine) that came near him.

Once he was in a race,, he was ok.
He raced till he was pretty old, however I recall somebody telling me that he died in a fire.

It was told that he bit some fingers off a groom his 3yo yr. An owner said, "He's a Hambletonian winner... if he wants a groom, feed him a groom!"

He was stabled on the south side shedrow of the Hayes Fair Acres barn,(it had a big rotunda in the center with oil portraits of all their horses, and the Hayes family) and when they got him out of the stall, security made everybody clear away. That barn was later lost to fire.

I jogged horses next to him and he was just as nice as any horse, but he was a scary, vicious bastard at all other times. I was about 16yrs old and fearless at that time, but I was sure glad I didn't have to work around him.

Nevele Pride was vicious until the day he died. I read an article in HB that interviewed the farm mgr that stood him. His appraisal of NP was, "He don't smile much." He went on to say that that they could only "live cover" with him because he was too dangerous to get near to collect semen, and that was only on days he wanted to be caught. They used 2  10ft 'bull poles' with hooks to snag his halter and aim him to the breeding stocks, then turn him loose to got back out after breeding. He wasn't any better when I stabled near him his 3yo year.

Nevele Pride inherited his charming disposition from his dam, Thankful, who was given the nickname "Little Evil" by those who had to deal with her. Harold Dancer trained Thankful. She was worse than her son.

That mean streak does often get passed along:

Falcon Seelster was bad news, and his daughter Shady Daisy was also very difficult to deal with.

Noble Gesture was a nightmare, and his son Balanced Image, as well as many of that one

I was wondering what ever happened to the lost phone conversation said to have taken place at Northfield

Two guys at Northfield Park (Cleveland) were having a coversation on the apron about the positive effects of using cattle-prods to train steeds for their first quarter. One even suggested the possibility of adding cattle-prods (batteries and all) to the end of the whips in harness racing).

A nearby person, disgruntled with the possibility of animal abuse dialed PETA on their cell-phone and recorded the conversation.

Within minutes about fifty Cleveland police converged on the two guys, cuffed them and took 'em away.
Two years later and in court the cell-phone recording could not be reproduced (the customer had switched to a more economical and more ego based carrier).
All the judge kept saying was "I'm wondering what happened to the lost phone conversation at Northfield?'

 wtf are you talking about?

FWIW, this was joke!

The subsequent story I made up and was intended to be purse nonsense because I didn't comprehend the comment that followed it.

2nd FWIW; I've seen "Northville Downs" referred to internet searches as "Northville Park" (the latter doesn't exist).

I've also seen "Northfield Park" referred to as "Northfield Downs" (the latter of which does not exist.

This vague comment led me me to believe that it was some type of subtle explanation for the Michigan on-going's and/or Northville Downs.

My sincere aplogies for the confusuion.

Furthermore, I've never been to Northfield Park, don't have any interested in Np (even when the Lake Erie races), nor likely never will.

Never been to Lebanon. Was at Latonia one in 1972. Was at Scioto once 1974.

Raceway Park is/was relatively close to Detroit and I'm unable to count how many times I've been there.

I'm only able to recall actually-meeting-in-person two Ohio horsemen, one of which is retired.
Years ago I knew a small-time owner that I seen some years ago at RP.

Thus you could take my first hand present-day-knowledge of Ohio racing and perhaps fill a pea-pod.
