Not always. A vet gave me some good advice about that. Tie the placenta that's hanging out into a knot so the mare can't step on it. Then the weight of the knotted placenta keeps a steady gentle pull on it until it lets go. Pulling on it can cause internal damage to the mare. You can also give the mare a shot that causes contractions to expel it, but the "knot trick" really works better.

sure is active little shit.   colt or filly?  just got home from northfield and got to see it.  we need a rerun of the birthing tape .  missed it. and I've lost alot of sleep waiting for it to pop out.   thumbsup

Oxytocin is the shot we sometimes give, if the tying doesn't work.  Then when the mare expels it, we make sure the whole placenta is there, with nothing left in the mare.  Spread it out.  We had a mare once who had piece stuck inside and we had to take to the equine hospital. Flushed her and lots of infection in just a day. Antibiotics and continued flushing did the trick.
