And the best one I ever saw was at Sportsman's Park. I know I've told the story many times, but here it is again. I lost all of my paycheck one Friday after I got paid. Saturday night I went to the paddock to see my old buddy Doug Hamilton for a $40 loan.
He was sitting out on the porch in the paddock with Darryl Busse. I asked Doug to lend me $40 and he went to the driver's room to get it our of his locker. I stood there and talked to Busse for a few when I saw Doug coming back with my $40. He made a motion to be quiet, then lit a small firecracker, came up from behind Busse, and set it under Busse's foot.
When that thing exploded, I thought Darryl had a heart attack. The look on his face was priceless, and Dougie said "Heres your $40 Schmidt." Both of us we in tears!
