O/T Awesome!
« on: August 28, 2012, 02:46:56 PM »
Old Hal spent the afternoon test driving Porsches at a road course near the Joliet Speedway.  Got the 911 up to 120mph, couldn't go faster due to the length  of the  straightaways .Also drove a Panamera and a Boxter.  It's been awhile since I drove a car the fast.
(The first time legally!)  They are not as expensive as I thought.  The Boxter starts at around $60,000, the 911 $75,000, and the Panamera $83,000.  There is only one problem.  Mrs Hal won't let me get one!

I hear Paul Bryant talk about that kind of experience on "Drive Chicago" on WLS 890AM on Saturday mornings. Sounds like a hoot! Is it expensive?

That's the best part JS, it was free!  It was sponsored by Porsche, and a couple of magazines, Yachting magazine amongst them.  Included lunch, a nice scale model of a classic Porsche and some baseball caps.  They had professional drivers there also.  One would dive a pace car that you would follow around the course.
On the motor cross course, one of the pros went with you and gave you advice as you were  speeding along. No, old Hal did not knock down any cones, even on the hairpin turns.

The 911 Turbo Carerra will do much more than 120mph. Had one and know first hand. Ours was before the current refinements also. They claim to top out at nearly 200MPH now.
Never went that fast in the "P" as the wife called it but the 427 Vette we owned was clocked on Nevada trooper radar between Tonapah and Goldfield (U.S. 95) at 156 mph. The guy pulled us over so he could look at the power plant--no lie.
The ONLY way he saw us was because of Chevies side mounted exhast system that was throwing sand and other crap 15 feet into the air.  Thems was the dayz !!
