One of my favorite cards of the year, all the top colts, fillies and older horses going for big money, establishing dominance in their respective divisions.
1- Cedar Dove. Jamieson all but guaranteed a win with Frenchfrysandvinegar. I see that getting him some on track pay back. The Dove picks up Pierce and that's light years above Vanderkemp. Look for an upset. Box 2,6,7,8 in the exotics.
2- Somewhereoverarainbow: Peaking at the right time. Absolutely destroyed them last week and made it look effortless. This royally bred filly has Andy Miller but I'm playing anyway. Box 1,2,3,7 in the exotics.
3- Mister Herbie. I see Commander Crowe and Chapter Seven battling and Herbie picking up the pieces.
4- Romantic Moment. One half of the powerful Tatker entry. Throw a dart in here, this is a tight race. Box 1,3,4,8 in the exotics.
5- Bee A Magician. I'm not a huge Rick Zeron fan against the big boys, but this is a nice nice filly. Box 2,3,6,8 in the exotics.
6- Win Missy B. Can't argue against the results. She's beaten the heavy morning line favorite the last two starts. Box 1,2,3,5 in the exotics.
7- Captaintreacherous. Dominating two year old who looked identical to his old man last start. 100 dollar straight exactor 2-7
8- Wheelin N Dealing. Perfect 8 for 8 on the season so far for the powerful Jones/Filion combination. I don't think it ends here. Key this one on top of 1,3,4,8,10
9- Heston Bluechip. Not the sexiest horse in the field but a nice one that flys under the radar. Quietly has had a very nice year in a wide open division. Box with 1,2,4,5
10- Rebeka Bayama. The big mare had a nice tune up last week, and she's in tough against the best tonight. She won't get things her way tonight, but I think she's good enough to win. Box with 3,4,9,11
11- Little Brown Fox. Very consistent horse and he'll have to be on his A game tonight. Probably the toughest race for me to handicap. Box 2,3,4,8 in the exotics.
12- Golden Receiver. Didn't beat himself up last week but will be all systems go tonight.
Good luck and enjoy the great racing!!!

Alright here is my take on the card
Race 1 #8 Frenchfrysnvinegar- I had her last year at big odds and tonight I have to take her as the fav. She Rolls
Race#2- Somewherovrainbow- Are you kidding me with this breeding? I would single her in the DD and I would play her straight in ex her with I luv the Night life.
Race 3- Commander crowe wins this end fo story. 6 horse field, he can drop to last and he is going to run down this field Chapter 7 runs 3rd straight punch Crowe Herbie
Race #4 # 3 Romantic Moment is the best horse in the division right now, She stands above the rest, #1 Economy Terror is better than #4 American Jewel right now and the only other horse to consider is #5 Shelliscape and that is only if they go crazy up front
Race#5 I think #6 Bee A Magician is the best. She has already beat the 8 when big money was on the line, but you have to use both when playing the pick 4. I will play more off Bee A Magician
Race#6 Only 3 you can use here And I like # 2 Win Misy B the best here, She Made Check Me outs Futurity an even bigger Joke and right now she is better. The other horse to use is #6 Maven. I thought she was better than check me out all year so I think she can win as well
Race#7 # 3 Captaintreacherous- IMO the horse of the year, and only going to get better at 3. Straight punch him and the 2 Rockin Amedeus- Holy Breeding here and he was running over horses last week after a bad drive by Yanni
Race #8- Well I was worried about Wheelin and Dealing being off a month last week, he still won, my 2nd biggest lock on the card. Wins easy
Race#9 Imo There are only 2 horses that can't win this race. The #6 Dapper Dude and the #9 Hillbilly Hanover. The rest of the field can win this but I think the best horse is # 3 Escape The News! 30-1 Ml? Really. Does the ML guy even watch the races? He was running over horses in the better of the 2 divisions. Going to use all but the 2 I said had no chance in the pick 4 but if I can get 15-1 on the News, Ill be betting $100 to win
Race #10 4 horse race IMO, #2 Rocklamation, #4 Anndrovette, #9 Rebeka Bayama, and #11 Drop The Ball. I Think Bayama is the best horse but all 4 will be on the pick 4 ticket
Race#11 #3 Intimidate he went by market share( And The rest of the field like they were shot) IMO SF chose poorly, Now I get Ronnie for a big final? Perfect. Little Brown Fox will finish ahead of Market Share
Race#12 #10 Forclosure- 30-1 ML?? Are you kidding me? Does the morning line guy even watch the previous weeks races? Fresh horse and I think he wins by 4 and I am hoping for 10-1 but this horse should be 2nd choice in this field.
Good luck All

Pezz, I pretty much agree with your selections! slaphead slaphead Hope you have a big night!
There will be some upsets. Maybe only one or two or as many as 6. I predict at least one will come where least expected.
That's's the one I hope I come up with and it might be when the gate starts rolling!
-
Good luck guys!
Looks like the rain could play a big factor tonight, keep an eye out for track bias.
Lots of chalk tonight, but a few value plays.
R1
-
R1 - #8 Frenchfrysnvinegar
R 2 - #2 Somwheovarrainbow looks very solid. Can leave hard and come home hard. Sitting on a huge mile. 2W1/5/3
R3 - #6 Chapter Seven
R4 - Romantic Moment
Pick Four (3/5-2/6/8-1/2/11-3)
R 5 - looking for another match race between the low odds Bee A Magician and To Dream ON. If the price allows the #2 Royal Assests getting Tetrick may be in the right place at the right time for a nice upset. At a price.
R6 - Another race where the top 2(Check Me Out & Win Missy B) may tangle and set it up for #11 Chilitodayhotamle who has a nice late kick. Price will allow.
R7 - #3Captaintreacherous
R8 - Looking for a good speed trip for # * Royalty For Life. 8W2/1/4
Pick Four (1/2/8-4/7/10-2/11-3)
R 9 - #Mel Mara is the sharpest horse going in. Will be leaving and following what I think will be a live flow. 10W7/4/2
R 10 - Drop The Ball is much the best here. Might get lucky and get 3-2 here. 11W2/9/4
R 11 - Intimidate's brush had to be seen to be believed last week. Now gets Pierce? What's no to like. 3W8/4/2
Late Double (3-10)
R12 - Foreclosure
went an unbelievable mile in last over easier. Has been showing good speed since joining the Burks barn. Works out a trip here and closes by them all late. 10W7/8/5
Good luck to all!!!!!
-
I love Chapter Seven tonight and the European horse has not been winning lately while Chapter Seven is at the top of his game.
Market Share drew poorly and I don't like his chances tonight because of it, not to mention the horse that beat him last week looked awesome doing it.
Good luck to everyone playing.
-
Looks like a good card to watch for me, bound to be some upsets with a sloppy track.
Good luck to everyone in action.
-
Marty Party scratched in the 4th race, so Destinys Chance is now in. Also Majestized scratched in the 8th race, so Fashion Blizzard gets in.
-
Playing Mel Mara back and he will have to leave for position.
Lets try Garys man Bret with....CAMILLE in the 10th!

If Frenchfrysnvinegar runs her best race she should win the first. But she is very inconsistent. Tamla Celeber is a sneaky play for me but the post will definitely be a problem. Was supposed to be a monster coming over here, making over a million dollars but disappointed so far. Last week she looked a lot better then she did in her first two starts and had plenty of pace with no where to go in the stretch. Should offer some value if Frenchfrysnvinegar falters.

These are my picks for the handicapping contest on Twin Spires. Have $5 WP on each.
R1 #8 FRENCHFRIESNVINEGAR - should win
R2 #4 ART IDEAL - maiden but when everyone is picking Andy I'm picking elsewhere
R3 #2 MISTER HERBIE - beat Chapter Seven the last time they raced together in CA, might happen again
R4 #5 SHELLISCAPE - sits back and lets the others bang heads
R5 #3 MISTERY WOMAN - gets it done at a decent price
R6 #1 CHECK ME OUT - gets payback
R7 #3 CAPTAINTREACHEROUS - don't want to root against that Alagna guy
R8 #2 WHEELING N DEALIN - uhm, because he likes to win
R9 #3 ESCAPE THE NEWS - when pezz talks, people listen (unless it's football).
R10 #2 ROCKLAMATION - horse gets no respect at the windows, she's got mine.
R11 #7 GUCCIO - why? cuz I love being punished by another bad Takter drive.
R12 #10 FORECLOSURE N - pezz hooked me up with some hot steam here last week, going to play back despite my best judgement.
-
Race 1 pick 3..
8 / 1,2,4,5 / 2,4,6 an ease into bet...
-
Gotta like .20 cent Pick 3's === for that price okay to take a chance on a price horse.
Race 2 #3 Parlee Beach 5-1
for whatever reason, woke up in Kentucky. Like with the 5,7
pick 3 3 / 6 / A and 3 / 246 / 1345
Race 4 #5 Shelliscape 7-1
give another try after good try last week. I don't think Romantic Momenty will control everything and hoping the uincoupled entry rough her up.
pick 3 5 / A / 126 eacta 134 / 5 win on the 5
Race 6 #6 Maven 6-1
I will take a shot on #6 Maven, think she will leave hard enough to get great trip.... She hasn't beaten the top 2, but always close..... exacta 6 / 12 12 / 6
trying pick 3 tossing rail 26 / 3 / 12
race 9 Bettors Edge 9-2
lotsa speed in here, think when the dust settles at the quarter pole he can find himself 2nd over
Race 10 #8 Ginger and Fred 15-1
raced well at Mohawk with bad posts and comes off sharp Q..... How can this horse win from the 8 hole against this quality ( some might say she needs a wreck ) well, I will tell you when they flash the 1/8th split if she has a shot... if they get the first eight in 12 and change --- well I hop Zeron puts her in the middle of the track and says giddy up
Wish like heck they were covering the races on TVG but see that they are going to be on some network that Direct TV does not cover.....
Good Luck Gang

Mistake on my part, hit the wrong number.... Lots of upsets on the muddy track tonight. The captain getting beat screws several of my rolling pick tickets. shootme

Being on the front on a muddy track can be the kiss of death... very tiring. Being parked kept Chapter Seven much fresher than the leader. The deepest mud is always at the rail.

If Palone wouldn't have come Tetrick was !!!!! They weren't going to let the best horse in the race walk around the track .

Sometimes we get into these insane discussions over drivers when I speak of "top 5". So for the record, they were missing one completely last night (Brennan) & another, who for some strange reason couldn't drive a live horse all season (Sears), here's the tally:
Tetrick wins 4 despite losing with 2 who "couldn't lose".
Gingras takes 3.
Pierce wins with one that Gary could've driven.
Sears get the ONLY win from off the pace (worse than 3rd in the stretch).
That's 9-12.
Millers each get 1. Sylvain Filion was the only non-Meadowlands driver to win a race - he had 3 BIG chances. So the next time someone tries to convince me that Palone or any of the Canadien guys can stay with the "top 5", please save this set of results as a reminder!
Glad to see The Crown going to Pokie next year.
-
I'll have you know I could drive better than 70% of all drivers today, if I chose to drive horses.
The reason I never accepted the license is due to the fact that the top 10% win 90% of all races. I would fall in to the category of drivers like Don McKirgan, Randy Tharps, Eric Goodell, Corey Callahan, etc. That is not good enough for me.
It has never made sense to me when I could get Ron Pierce, David Miller, Dave Palone, or even driving god Miller to drive a horse for 5%. If they could get only 1/20th of a second more out of a horse than me, they will win a lot of photos I would lose.
In other words, I am smarter than most drivers today. ;D

Glad to see The Crown going to Pokie next year.

Wasn't he just the Grand Circuit leading driver in 2011 and i think in 08 or 09 ? I guess the top 5 must have called off them years slaphead
It's all about the driving accounts you pick up and that will never happen with Palone because he doesn't drive on the east coast full time.
Is Palone in my top 3 ? no but its already been proven he can drive with them.
-
Yea you and about 3 other people slaphead
thumbsup It should never be held at a place like that. Woodbine handled 4 million last night, and Pocono barely got to 2 mil 2 years ago. The Breeders crown should never be held on any track less than 7/8 or where they have ZERO handle.
-
You're surprised that the best horses - usually American - were driven by the American regulars? I guess I missed your point Dolfan. I think Filion, Jamieson and youngsters Zeron, McNair could easily drive with the Meds regulars. It's all what you have between the shafts, and the big horses went to the big drivers. Jamieson has proven he's one of the best and can hold his own against anyone. Filion has always been good but it's just more obvious now that's he finally out of Quebec. He would have had the drive (and win) on Intimidate but stuck with the the trainer that stayed with him all year and drove Prestigidator.
Did you watch Zeron win the Jug? Or Waples win the North American Cup? Anyone can cherry pick results on one card.
For the record great Canadian drivers in the history of the sport include - John Campbell, Joe O'Brien, Billy O'Donnell, Mike Lachance, Wally Hennessy, Herve Filion and many more. Yannick is Canadian as well. I'll put that bunch up against anyone... Canadians have dominated the Meadowlands since it opened.
-
It's no secret that I think Tim Tetrick is tops. When he started outdriving me when he was a young pup I quit and let him drive all of mine. Wish I'd have had enough stock that he was still driving for me. He's my good friend, and I think he'll shatter a bunch of records in his career. Couldn't happen to a better young man.
-

I hope everyone enjoyed last night and hope we can enjoy many more nights like that again in the future.
Let's hope they finally announce something, anything in Canada that keeps their sire stake program going and their purses at Woodbine and Mohawk at 50% or more of what they currently have.
Best wishes - JJ

thumbsup It should never be held at a place like that. Woodbine handled 4 million last night, and Pocono barely got to 2 mil 2 years ago. The Breeders crown should never be held on any track less than 7/8 or where they have ZERO handle.
That point I cannot argue.
I just thought that the large majority of races were pretty lackluster last night. You had all the great horses, many of the best drivers (who dominated) & yet virtually every race was down to 2 or 3 by headstretch, which resembles Northfield more than anything else. With the exception of 2 races out of 12, if you didn't leave the gate you didn't win. How often can you say that at any non-1/2 mile track? In fact, you can't even see that on a 1/2 mile track filled with stakes races, except Delaware.
The races itself were horrendous, IMO.

1st off, you couldn't sell me on MacDonald & his 9% at YR or Randy Waples at any time. Yes, I know they're great guys but they're no match for Sears, Tetrick, Yannick... Does that mena they can never win? Of course not. Frank Popfinger & Russell Rash also won some races against Carmine & Herve...
I'm not picking on Canada. I'm fully aware that many of the best horsemen are FROM Canada but my point that you are missing is their driving colony is inferior to the M1 driving colony of the last 20 years. Everyone's is. But don't tell me that because Scott Zeron or Mark MacDonald (who I know is a great guy) can get a fast horse out 1st or 2nd at Delaware & win, that they are real competitors with Brian Sears or Ron Pierce or George Brennan.
I'm not "cherry picking". The guys in the "top 5" are in the top 5 because they win these big races consistently.
If I wanted to cherry pick I'd mention how Aracache got the services of George Brennan once & poof, set his lifetime mark. But you're gonna try to tell me that Doug McNair is right up there with the best. slaphead

Every race was down to 3 at the head of the stretch simply because if you look at every race on the card( Besides the 3 year old colts) there were only 2 to 3 who could really win. It is just the way it was this year in all the divisions. Had nothing to do with it being at Woodbine.
-
i agree pezz
imo it has been that way for yrs on breeders crown nights. you can virtually toss at least 1/2 to 3/4 of any field because they have no real shot of winning.i also think it keeps the handle down.
to the real fans it is a treat to see the best of the best face each other and settle things on the track
i am also with jordan and hoping for the best in canada
i may despise the 7/8th tracks but it would be a big blow to the sport if they go down

Like the KY derby, most are there to say they were there.
But its horse racing, and post positions and trips make a difference on who rounds out the the gimmicks.
-
So you guys are saying the Breeders Crown races just suck, in general.
I guess you can make that point. A chalk fest every year? Is this any different from Jug day?
Hambo cards always seem to come up with a few logical price horses & a few zany ones too.
I'm going to keep this discussion in mind when we watch the BC at Pcd next year just to see if the races are any better.

I think they should have ALL racing on 1/2 mile tracks.. :) :) :)

That would be a good way to kill the sport

That would be a good way to kill the sport
Actually, I've always been of the opinion that big track racing has had allot to do with the killing of the sport. You can look at it as just another way to gamble (which is a loser) or like my experience, it was a sport I fell in love with watching the action up close at RR & YR as a teenager. I would NEVER have taken an interest watching big tracks, where the tv has the only real view.
1/2 mile tracks also have a smaller nut to meet, all around. And probably the 2 most historic tracks - Goshen & Delaware. But of course today's "great" trainers - aka/anyone with a "smart" vet - do not know how to train the fastest horses to get those turns. Because, after all, the breed must be so different than when Albatross, Bret Hanover, Niatross & Cam Fella flew around those 1/2 mile tracks.
Nfld gets a pretty good handle despite pathetic racing with pathetic drivers.
IMO they should take all those bigger tracks & turn them into golf courses! thumbsup

rflmao1 sorry I have to laugh....... I have to agree with Dolfan which I rarely do rflmao1 never met the man and don't have a thing against him..... just rarely seem to see things the way he sees them. rflmao1

So you going to credit Northfields handle to it being a 1/2 mile track ? slaphead

I met him for the first time at The Jugette/Jug this year. The man knows the game.

If Harness racing went to only half mile racing, I would just bet the T-breds then. 1/2 mile racing sucks. Michael's Power turned out to be a good one didn't he???
-
I have the kind of mind that likes puzzles, so 1/2 mile tracks intrigue me. There are so many variables. (post position, track condition, gate speed, driver, type of trip the horse likes, etc, etc.) The cat & mouse game on a small track interests me more.
That being said, I found it way easier to drive on a bigger track, even though I won more races on a half miler. Everybody has their own preferences.
-
My position is well known. I love a half with no passing lane. I also love a 5/8 with no passing lane. If racing on a mile track is mandatory, you might as well have a passing lane because everyone drifts off the rail so far anyway.
And I really wish ALL horses raced two heats each time they raced on a half. Call me old school if you want, but that is harness racing, laddies.

Same Michaels Power who won all those races at Wdb/Moh. BTW, I still have a shade of doubt about those retention barns when it comes to this horse. They were pretty apprehensive about shelling out the cash to get in.
If harness went to only mile tracks, I'd bet nothing & watch little.
Understand though that I am not a very big gambler so 10-horse fields do not turn me on & when I do bet it's usually to win on my idea of an overlay. That said, I could watch live harness at any 1/2 mile track & have a great time. That is what is missing in the sport - newcomers who can fall in love with the game. Passion.
Same can be said for baseball. I know one Detroit Tigers fan who watched the World Series. No one else cared. I heard somewhere that it wasn't very good. idunno

I'm just pointing out that it is possible to get decent handles on 1/2 mile tracks. I can't remember who but someone here figured out that generally, the handles on 1/2's are much better than 5/8's.
I looked at Bal vs. May on comparable nights - Wed. for Bal & Thu for May with this "scientific" result:
Looks like Bal handles about 20% more than Maywood. There are some variables like the constant bickering done about Maywood and then there's the fact that approximately 25% more horses race in every race - 10 instead of 8. That's 2 extra mouths to feed as far as horsemen & horses go. Maywood's upkeep is smaller being that the building & track are much smaller. In the end, it's closer to a wash than you think.

Old school is great for fans of it. However, I really doubt that old school ways will attrack any new blood. The passing lane on any track helps fight the notion that shenanigans are taking place. Whether they are or not. As for Maywood and Balmoral, they both will stay open only as long as there is hope for slots, no matter how slim. I would imagine the land Maywood sits on is more valuable than Balmoral's land. If things fall apart, I would expect Balmioral would be left to race weekends only. Balmoral is close to the Indiana border. Maybe some day the Hoosier's will build a racino in NW Indiana.
-
If I had a choice on a track size to take someone new to the track, it would be on a half mile track. If I had a choice on how often there is a race, it would be every 15 minutes. It is hard getting people to stay focused and want to stay when there are 20-25 minutes between races. These days I don't even want to stick around and wait that long.
-
IMO a half mile track is the best to watch and Nfld is my favorite, at least when I was betting there they
were competitive races with a good amount of movement during the mile. The mile track is my best to
gamble on, less getting locked in and the larger fields make for the best pools. I think Balmoral has as
bad of fields as you can get but they still outhandle every place except M1, I'd like to bet someone that
tomorrow night Bal don't do 500K. Who is brave enough to put a cup of coffee and a donut ?

Half-mile racing is much better to watch from the grandstand, and requires alot more strategy by drivers. It's alot easier to be a driver on a mile.
How's this for a new Idea? Allow the #7 & #8 to move to the 2nd tier to follow someone else off the gate (their choice) instead of hanging out there on the wing. idunno

That would totally eliminate pp 7 & 8 as front runners.
I prefer the severely slanted starting gate with a roving start like Maywood. In fact, Maywood might have the best answers to the 1/2 mile track dilemmas but it is masked by cheap horses with only 2 skilled drivers.

Post 8 at May is comparative to pp 10 at M1 which wins at 7.9%.

I did note "by choice". If you have a horse with good gate speed that has a good shot of winning, then don't choose to take the back tier. If there's an odds-on monster that drew the rail you might opt to follow them out and win with the right trip. The #9 horse at Maywood(who trails the #1) has a full 3% better winning avg than the #8. Ease up, it's just an idea. Trust me... I've had dumber ones.

At Northfield the 9 is 3% than the 6

redrose Please, I wasn't trying to criticize your idea. On the contrary, we need all ideas & an open mind on anything that's broken.
The biggest problem with a choice is the average bettor will never know where the horses are actually starting from.
Also, starting 7 & 8 behind 1 & 2 may be beneficial to 7 & 8 but then 5 & 6 will become the new 7 & 8!

Sorry if I took it wrong. I always try to think up ways to make it better racing. If the fans & bettors aren't interested in watching our sport we're screwed.

I know the skipper put out the bet, but that is awful! Nothing else is going tonight and that is it?
By the way Skipper, first, get healthy, second, Balmoral does not out handle weg. They are probably 3rd but definitely not 2nd
