A really fine post Hal, but the media is largely from NY & therefor lives around Democratic supporters. There will always be a bias.
This is an interesting article, titled "All Signs Point To Romney" but concludes that his likeability is so poor it is keeping him from the Presidency. I believe the likeability issue stems from the negative attack ads, which really do work (unfortunately).

The Republican Party has been hijacked by religious zealots like that pea brained Senatorial candidate, Clay Akin.
At the same time, the Democratic Party has been hijacked by the left. Difference is, Obama is one of them while Romney is just playing the part.
This is why our country's biggest problems occur when there is no balance of power.
What we need is an Independent Party who believes as most of us do, that marijuana is fine behind closed doors, a woman has the right to choose during the 1st trimester only & that prostitution should be legalized & taxed.
-

Exactly. Romney is a moderate at heart. That's how he got elected in Massachusetts.
-
As I said before, Romney does not believe in weed, gay marriage, or abortion. His own campaign manager in Nevada told me this, and I told the campaign manager that he is then an asshole.
One thing about me-I open my mouth and out it rolls. Just today a player asked what I thought of Romney's VP pick and I instantly said "He is an asshole...socially. That being said, I agree with him more fiscally than Romney."
Well it turns out the guy knows Ryan and has had several talks with him recently. He is trying to gauge what middle Americans think of Ryan.
-

IMO, Romney does not care one bit about those social issues. I would bet all of my money that if it were completely up to him, he would not govern those issues - he'd leave it to the states to figure it out. Romney's campaign manager may have told you that because he just assumed that if you were at a Romney rally (or whatever it was) you were probably a righty who wanted to hear that.
As Elgin said, that's how he got elected in MA. Not to be a social Hitler but to get things in line fiscally.
And that is why he gets my support. I can only hope that the Dems just barely hold on to the Senate, throw out Harry Reid & vote with the GOP to repeal Obamacare in favor of something much better, which is what we want & deserve.
-
Actually the guy was sitting at my roulette table. When he told me that he was Romney's campaign manager for all of Nevada and parts of California and Arizona, I told him exactly how Romney could win this race. The guy said "Ok, another smart guy who knows how he can win...let's hear it."
I said three things will get Romney the election in a landslide:
1. Have him immediately stf up about abortion. Neither Romney nor any other man has the right to tell women what to do if they are pregnant.
2. Promise to immediately legalize gay marriage. Why should the gays not be allowed to be just as miserable as the rest of us?
3. Promise to legalize pot immediately.
The guy replied he would never get nominated with those three things, I said then he is an asshole and I would never vote for anyone who doesn't have the balls to promise those three things. There you get the women's vote, the gay vote and the pothead vote. Cinch the election.
And now you know why I love Gary Johnson. He is the only one in this race with balls and honesty.

Stoners generally are one hell of a lot smarter, more creative, and in far better control than drunks. I know...I have been both. Ever hear of a driver stoned on weed killing anyone or a stoner starting a fight? Of course not. The world is a lot happier, safer place with stoners than with drinkers. Matter of fact, the entire world needs to use more weed.

They may be more creative and smarter at first, but after awhile it fries their brains and common sense.
Compared to drunks they are better though.

Jeremy, your posts are right on! That is exactly why I say whatever a person does behind close doors, in their own home is fine & dandy with me. As long as it doesn't affect me or my loved ones when they are innocently behind the wheel of a vehicle.
And yes, bring back prohibition. I'm fine with that. Anything MADD says, I'm with.
-
"And yes, bring back prohibition. I'm fine with that. Anything MADD says, I'm with."
So, you are in favor of telling people what to do behind closed doors, in some cases.
For the record, I am not in favor of:
1. Legalizing pot
2. Abortion
3.gay marriage.
What I am not:
1. a religious zealot
Would I vote for someone who is in favor of one or more of the things I am not? Yes I would. When you have only two realistic choices, I go with the best one. We can fantasize all we want about 3rd or fourth parties and how nice it would be if they had a chance, but in 2012, they don't. That is the harsh reality of the situation. I see this election as either you embrace Obama and his
ultra-left policies and anti-Americanism and his total ineptitude or you vote for Romney. Do I think Romney is the perfect candidate? Hell no. But he is light years better than Obama. (No, I didn't vote for Romney in the primary)

No, MADD is Mothers Against DRUNK DRIVING, not against what people do in their houses. I don't want to tell anybody anything other than don't endanger other people by driving under substance influence. That's all. You wanna smoke or kill yourself? Go right ahead. Hell, if I were terminal & in pain, I'd move to Oregon!
Why do you want to tell people who they can marry? In 20 years, they're gonna look back & say "can you believe people were that crazy, to be against gay marriage".
-

Just like people have looked back and thought..........can you believe people were that crazy to be against interracial marriage?
-
I don't think people are going to be looking back and saying that in 20 years.
-
I am also against interracial gay marriage .Now if same sex couples want to live together and make whoopee on the kitchen table, go ahead. I don't care what they do behind closed doors. But, I do and always have defined marriage as between a man and a woman. I am not changing that no matter how many names I get called or if you stick a gun to my head and threaten to kill me.
-
Conservatives are always shouting about state's rights. Well, marriage is controlled by the states. Same sex marriage is legal in five Northeastern states, Iowa and Washington D.C. The people in those states--or their elected representatives--have decided it's OK. End of story. If it upsets someone, they can move to Illinois.

What is your point.? I never said states didn't have the right to implement it. I just think it sucks. There are a lot of things that are"legal" that I don't agree with., I guess totalitarians don't get that.
-
If gay marriage debates start to end up becoming an attack or negative against Christians I will become one of the biggest anti gay marriage people you will ever meet.
When people that are for gay marriage were mean and talked down to workers at Chik Fil A, my mind has already started to turn. You shouldn't get what you want by being assholes to innocent people.
When it appeared to me that only $2000 out of millions went to anti gay groups, and the others were considered anti gay, including a Christian youth sports group, my opinion started to change.
So no, in 20 years people won't be looking back and saying how could people be against gay marriage, they will be thinking you know if they weren't so hostile towards me and my beliefs, I wouldn't have much of a problem with it.
-
Well, being into gun sports my entire life, with a gun to my head I would agree to anything, no matter how much I had to lie!
I don't believe in gay marriage either, but that's my choice. No need to fight over it.
Hal: "Gay marriage sucks" is just funny. rflmao1

When you live in a state where it's legal and commonplace, you get used to it pretty quickly. Lots of these marriages take place in public spaces--garden style parks--and it's no big deal, around here, anyway.
Then again, all the states (plus D.C.) that sanction same-sex marriage went big for Obama in the last election, and will do so again this time. Maybe that's just a coincidence.
-

It just goes to prove that no one, even Obama, is wrong all of the time!
I guess I will just never understand how anyone can be so against something that has zero effect on their life. Who are gays hurting by getting married? Absolutely no one is the answer. Who are they offending - the hundred million or so people who are divorced?

An attack against Christians? All Christians? Including the gay Christians? Are you going to let a few morons control your thinking?
Where would Jews be if we decided to hate every Christian because some were KKK members. We don't hate all Germans & some of them are still Nazi supporters. Israelis live among Muslims despite the terrorism that is always threatening the State. Do we feel hatred towards those individuals, yes, of course but not towards their race or religion.
How can you be so sure that in 20 years...? I'm basing my opinion on past performances - woman's rights, civil rights among blacks...
-
a few morons dont control my opinion, but when the rest of the group is silent that in my mind is the same as approving
-
Well then let me be the first to say that there is nothing & should be nothing said or intimated against ANY religion for this or any other purpose. Being gay is not a choice for the large majority of gays who like straights, have many different religious beliefs.

I think Mitt's basic instinct is to push for small government and lower taxes, and to butt out of personal social issues. If he could run on that premise he'd probably win. But as the Republican nominee he automatically gets bogged down in the debate over stem cell research and dozens of other issues that he wants no part of. Most of the Wall Street people are fiscal conservatives and social moderates; they believe it's nutso to tell scientists to forgo potentially life saving stem cell research because that stem cell represents a human life. The gap between the fiscal conservatives and the religious loonies is too great for Romney to bridge. That's why he's gonna lose.
-
The argument wasn't about stem cells; it was about embryonic stem cells. All of the successful work from stem cells was from adult stem cells. But it gets convoluted when the parties pitch it their own way.
I will really be surprised if Obama doesn't get beat. We'll find out in November.

Hopefully we won't have to worry about the embryonic stem cells anymore.

Much of the abomination of homosexuality discussed in Leviticus can be refuted in other areas of the Bible. (especially the New Testament)...........face it, sodomy and fellatio are sins......whether practiced among homo or heterosexuals........yet the government is not denying the right of marriage to a man and woman who engage in these offenses?
If the church chooses to not recognize gay marriage, then so be it........but for the government of any state to not allow equal rights among all committed couples, then I have a problem with it.
Jeremy.......I feel the same way you do about Chick-Fil-A when it comes to radicals blowing up abortion clinics........I am highly conservative on my opinions on abortion but in no way shape or form condone killing others to advance my opinion.......and get rather offended when Christians are all pegged as such.
-
I hereby stand up and testify to the world. Old Gary D. is, has been since September 18, 1975, and will remain a cunning linguist. Oh yes, it is true and I say it without pause.
