Title: O/T What Pena used
Post by: NIATROSS on June 15, 2012, 08:10:11 PM
I did not want this to get lost in the Brainard thread.

I had read where one of the drugs Pena used was approved for use in cattle for sexual reasons. ?

My questionis  if is  true of what benefit does it have on the gelding his vet used it on ?

I don't know what the substance was for Pena's horses, but we used to legally use anabolic steroids (Equipoise, Winsthrall V) on racehorses before they were banned. Some horse tend to act "studdy" and get more agressive. I liked to give Equipoise to ones who were poor eaters... most would have a better appetite, especially fillies. If they won't eat well they won't race well.

I think in geldings it tends to mock the testosterone production lost when the horse is castrated. No research articles to back me up, just my experience. Hope that gives you an idea of what the thinking behind it might be.

Years ago it was perfectly legal to use EPO.........it was a very common drug on vet trucks and much like it's inception to aid cancer patients it helped build a horse back up after being sick.......but as with many things......the abuses came to light and hence no more EPO..........and I believe with good reason.......the damaging effects on a horse it has been misused are are inhumane.
