Title: Mysterious Passing Of Giddy Up Lucky
Post by: Elgin on April 21, 2012, 05:43:23 AM
Josh Green Suspended, Will Appeal
By Bill Finley

Trainer Josh Green, assistant trainer Boyd Hudson Jr.,
and veterinarian Dr. Jan Henriksen have each received
suspensions from the New Jersey Racing Commission
over an incident last year that led to the death of top pacer
Giddy Up Lucky (Camluck).
The horse was treated with an iron supplement and had
a reaction to the medication that was fatal. Green was
suspended 90 days and fined $5,000, while Hudson and
Dr. Henriksen each received one-year bans and fines.
According to Green, the racing commission ruled that
the medication could only be given to the horse by a licensed
veterinarian. Hudson was cited for "injecting the
horse Giddy Up Lucky with a loaded syringe which resulted
in the death of the horse.

Shocking!!! I never knew iron supplements could kill a horse. I gave them many times myself.  4pezz2

This seems like (pardon the unintended pun) overkill.

When you allow the sudden death of one of the best aged pacers in NA to be spread by rumor for two weeks and only address those rumors when a reporter calls and asks about it, you open yourself up to a lot of questions. Can they say, it's our horse and it's nobody's business that he died and how? You simply can't do that with a top tier horse. They brought this scrutiny on themselves.

A focal point of Gural's push to revitalize M1 has been keeping aged horses on the track for several years so the fans can establish a connection with them. If one of those horses passes suddenly in the middle of the season, you better not pretend it never happened.

I agree the horse's death should not have been covered up. What I disagree with is suspending sometime for allowing a shot to be given in a state that allows such administration for horses that are not in competition.

I saw one drop dead right in my barn. The trainer had barely pushed the plunger on the syringe, and Bang, horse dropped dead. Dextran (aka 'pig-iron') contains a carrier that can cause anaphyllactic(sp) shock in equines, and thus not approved for horses. I quit using on new horses after that, tho I still used it on ones who had already had it without reaction.

To be safe do what I do, try it on the Mrs 1st and if she has no reaction than all is good.

iron always scared me.  i get it into them by other means than injection.  had too many "oh my gaud , what the hell" incidents that scared the hell out of me to keep injection it.   "here's your sign"  I got the point long time ago.  4pezz2
